I always thought it meant “God safeguard the King” just in different words.
I saw a sign at a pro-life rally that said:
No… shit…

Apparently there’s a bumpersticker out there that goes “Worship your mother” with the earth on it. If so, then the “Father” one may be a response to that bumpersticker.
I’ll try to avoid getting in hot water here, but a bumper sticker that really bugs me is
Against abortion? Don’t have one.
Not because of the point of view that its trying to address, but rather that it demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of the other side of the debate.
Memo to pro-choicers: they think it’s murder, in case you hadn’t picked up on that. If you’re really trying to argue with them (through your bumper sticker :dubious: ), then you must realize that what you’re saying is the equivalent (TO THEM!) of : “Against murder? Don’t kill somebody.”
There are more logical ways to express your pro-choice stance.
You must be kidding. People with this sticker understand the other side of the debate perfectly. It’s just that “keep your fucking stupid ideas about abortion to yourself, what I do isn’t your business” wouldn’t fit on your car unless you had a Humvee.
I’m not kidding, and those are two different things.
“Abortion isn’t murder.” would be a sensible thing to put on your car. (sensible if you really thought putting a bumper sticker on your car was helping the “debate”).
“Against abortion? Don’t have one.” indicates that the person with the bumper sticker doesn’t understand that people who are against a woman’s right to an abortion believe that it is murder.
Bumper stickers are slogans and not meant to be sensible.
Again, this is false. I know people with the bumper sticker who are aware of what the anti-abortion position is. None of this is worth the analysis you’re giving it, since slogans are supposed to be simple messages. As this thread shows, analyzing any one of them for a few seconds is likely to find a flaw.
Fine, but they’re not helping their cause by coming across like a moron, just like the guy with the “Iraq” bumper sticker.
You and I must have seen the same vehicle. I followed an SUV for a couple of miles on Westheimer last week; it had all that on the back.
"I got my Illustration/Painting degree so your kids can be commented on in Iraq on a messageboard i’m on in a shitty graphic design job because I don’t care"
snort
i second that.
Whenever I see that one, I always wonder if they are also against capital punishment, war, and eating meat. All of those stop beating hearts too. Some hearts get stopped because the alternative is worse. Obviously we don’t all agree on which circumstances those are, but if they are so in favor of beating hearts that they use that as their statement, they damn well better be pacifist vegetarians.
Not that I would do it myself, because it’s wrong to deface someone’s car, but I’d find it humorous if someone popped a Religion stops a working brain over the beating heart stickers.
I was thinking a good sticker would be: God gave you a brain so fucking use it already
Another idea: I went to college so I could make wargames about your kid in Iraq, but I don’t have a good job because the economy still sucks, so fuck you. PS your kid gets paid shit to get shot at. Of course, I have a small car so I’d have to wrap it around the sides…
Er, no; it means that the person with the bumper sticker has rejected that claim.
Speaking of three bumper stickers (and abortion), this morning I saw a car on the Interstate sporting two anti-abortion stickers (including the old standard “Choose Life”) flanking a John Kerry for President sticker.
Not only REJECTED it, but arguing from the point of view of one who has rejected it and doesn’t get that other people have NOT rejected it. Possibly even people who are
The ONLY people that it makes sense to are the people who already feel that way. In other words, they might as well put a bumper sticker up that says, “I’m preaching to the choir.”
Like I said before, “Abortion is not murder” would be a sensible bumper to convey that point of view. “Against abortion? Don’t have one.” is stupid.
Most bumper stickers preach to the choir. You weren’t under the misguided opinion that people expect to change deeply held sentiments and political beliefs while looking at the words on the tail end of the car in front of them?
Bumperstickers tend to be humorous and in your face. “If you don’t want an abortion, don’t have one” accomplishes exactly what it intends to do, no more, no less.
Fine. Let’s just close the thread then. Bumper stickers preach to the choir so none of them are stupid or illogical or miss the point.
“My child serves in Iraq, so yours can party in college” is a perfectly valid sentiment. It’s meant to bring soothing comfort to the other parents of soldiers who see it, so they know that they’re not alone.
Even “It’s not mother nature. It’s father god.” at least realizes there’s a “pagan” side of the debate (I guess) and chooses to understand that side.
So, congratulations, “against abortion? don’t have one” has lost the battle-of-wits with “it’s not mother nature. it’s father god”.
Some bumper stickers are stupid even for the side that puts them up. Things that don’t make sense, or are on some out their looney fringe. Calling a bumper sticker stupid because it’s not likely to encourage the other side to change sides on a debate nobody ever changes sides on is, well, not getting the point.
<clueless>Oh, you know this one bumper sticker I saw today that was really stupid? It said Vote Nader. I mean, can you imagine, like the other side(s) would ever actually vote for Nader if they saw a Vote Nader bumpersticker. It should read “Please consider a third party candidate.”</clueless>
Hello?
I prefer “I’d die to defend my Mom’s right to an abortion”, myself. Pisses them off to no end.
I’m (obviously) very much prochoice but this right-to-life bumper sticker, far from offending me, reflects a political attitude I completely respect. You want to campaign for people exercising their freedom to choose so as to opt for childbirth instead of abortion, have at it and best wishes to you and yours. And thanks for acknowleding the right to make that choice, that’s all we’ve ever asked.
