Threw Ipod Touch 4g on the ground, have few questions

I threw my ipod touch 4th generation when i was outside b/c i got very upset at something that happened today. I had the case on it it was a cheap one but basically a cover for the back of it as well and when i picked it up, basically the whole screen is cracked. The stop button came off as well. It doesnt power on at all. My questions are this

  1. I assume no way to fix this screen since its basically cracked the whole place right?
  2. Assuming thats the case, should i throw it down a few more times to make sure it breaks into more pieces? I have some documents there saved and worried if someone finds it in the garbage, then they could put the pieces back together. Or should i not need to worry about this.

Throw it a few times if you want. However, if you still want to use it, you might check with a store, as the screen is replaceable.

Find a place like this : http://www.jcdrepair.com - $69 while you wait.

May not be worth the repair as you can find them on eBay for about any repair price. Also, when something catastrophic like that happens to a device like that or a phone there are usually more things that need replacing.

Also, those replacement screens, unless OEM Apple are thinner and are prone to cracking. Not all but most.

FYI via my own experiences in replacing iPhone screens and an iPhone 5 that was trampled. Had to replace the screen and everything with it, a ribbon cable, back case, and battery.

My guess is electronbee is right and this isn’t going to be economical to repair. As far as the data security issue goes - have you tried hooking it up to see if you can still access the data? I can’t remember if they actually need power to read/write.

If they don’t - well then you can erase it from there. Technically this doesn’t truly erase it, but there is a least one program in iTunes that will do a secure wipe, but that probably won’t work now. However - that will be good for most people.

There was always a risk - that someone would break into your house and steal it - or rob it from you at gunpoint. You just want to reduce the risk you currently have to below that. Smashing it with a hammer will make you feel good (should probably use eye protection) - and then jam a screwdriver and break the slot. Put it in some food you are throw it away and unless the data is extremely valuable, you are a member of al Qaida, or it will put you in prison for many years - I wouldn’t worry about it.

okay i made a few mistakes in my first post. I can actually still power my ipod touch on. Problem though is the screen where you have to drag the arrow from left to right on the screen… i cannot drag it b/c the whole screen is cracked so when i put my finger on the left and bring it to the right, it doesnt work. Other big problem is when i put my finger on the cracked screen… there are lots of small pieces of broken glass that is on my finger so its obviously not really that safe.
Should i just throw it down a few more times just so the ipod touch cannot even power on then and then throw it away? Reason is b/c i have documents thats stored there that if someone finds my ipod touch, i dont want tthem to see it b/c it has lot of my information there.
What can i do now?

Smash it with a hammer.

Blend it.

Might want to deal with your anger problem before spending any money on either a phone repair or a new phone.

Good idea - or keep it around to sacrifice in the future by throwing it instead of the replacement.

If you really want to be careful about data on it, I’d start with what was mentioned above - can you still talk to it remotely from a computer? If so, you can wipe the data from there.

If not, you would need to take it apart, find the flash chip (there are teardowns available that show where these are, I imagine), and destroy it. Assuming you are worried about a random thief, and not someone with extreme capabilities, ripping the flash IC off the board will be sufficient.

Why not call the Apple people or bring it to the store and say you dropped it and need to retrieve the data? Isn’t that what the customer support people are around for? Trying to troubleshoot problems? You’re definitely not the first person to crack a screen and need to get your stuff off the device.

Yes i can still connect it to my computer. Connected to the computer and can view the documents that are stilll there. So i assume now just delete those documents and then take a hammer and break it?
