No seriously, as I peruse the internet after listening to Dave’s Rave today, I was driven to find out more about why we can’t tickle ourselves.
This study by Sarah Jayne Blakemore suggests that our brain is able to determine if stimulus is being self applied, therefore shutting itself off to respond to it.
If that were the case, why are we able to stimulate our genitals to the point of orgasm, sometimes even moreso that anyone else?
Hmm. Perhaps the cerebellum is not the part of the brain involved with sexual functioning? Just a WAG. But sex is a much more fundamental physiological function that whatever tickling is, so that may be the answer.
I’ve read that our responses to tickling and our responses to situations that cause us to panic. I didn’t think I was going to find a cite for this, and it sure isn’t where I first read it (can’t remember where that was), but this explains it pretty well. Basically, if the tickling is self-inflicted, we don’t panic, and we don’t laugh.
I can’t think of anyone who sees orgasms as reason to panic
I would think that masturbation is enabled by your brain because it seems to help you develop your sexuality and get used to the idea of using your genitals for pleasure. Any of this make sense to anyone else?
My experience with tickling is that the reason you feel ticklish is because you tense up when you know someone it tickling you. I’m usually ticklish, but if I concentrate and relax, it has no effect. From that, it seems that you can’t tickle yourself because you don’t tense up since you know what’s coming.
With masturbation, OTOH, you’re not likely to tense up.
Jar - before you leave, I wish to say that I can, in fact, tickle myself. I can’t drive myself into a frenzy, begging myself to please stop, but I can surely find spots that make me squirm and smile. So there’s something physiological involved in addition to the obviously psychological (control) thing. (And, yes, I can also make myself squirm and smile genitally, but I think that’s a different matter.)
Since handy mentioned the ear thing, here’s a little bit of TMI:
I had a mean itch in my ear the other day and was looking for a Q-tip to deal with the problem when I noticed some string I had unraveled while watching TV. I took the tiny threads and used them to tickle my ear, first the outside and then slowly closer to the source of the itch. This is where the twilight zone comes in: I could have sworn I had something incredibly similar to an orgasm, only in my ear.
There was a definite shudder, visual distortion and hard to keep the eyes open like during a sneeze, followed by intense relief and immediate sensitivity in the area, just like after masturbation.
WTF WAS THAT?? I asked myself, and am still wondering.
It was nowhere near as satisfying as the real thing of course, but it was strikingly similar.
So, there seems to be a connection between the tickles and masturbation
