Ticks are even more evil. Screw the damn bastards. What the hell does a tick do anyway? At least we know how many insects are beneficial on this planet.
Mowing the five acres here, I get half a dozen a weekend. Haven’t gotten Lyme yet.
My husband’s family has always worked outdoors. They swear by adding some bleach to the evening bath water, claim that it kills ticks, chiggers, and fleas. I don’t know how much bleach to add to the water, I think they just put in a splash or two. I have not tried this method myself, and so I will not vouch for its effectiveness, but I think that if I was out in tick or chigger infested areas, I’d certainly give it a shot.
We used to take “bleach baths” after picking blackberries (which are notorious for growing side by side with chiggers). Whether it worked or not, I don’t recall. We were always covered with bug bites, nicks, scraps, scabs, etc. as kids - it was all part of growing up in the country.
And I don’t think bats eat ticks - they mostly eat flying insects, IIRC.
I went to a house fire last night, and somehow picked up 3 of the mofos. The grass was cut, and I didn’t roll on the ground at any time.
On second thought, they may have been bedbugs that I picked up at the house we did training in 2 weeks ago. The place was seriously trashed before we ever started breaching walls and crawling through the crap on the floor. I can’t tell the difference between bedbugs and brown deer ticks. Whatever they were, 2 were crawling on my neck, and the third was on my thigh when I was getting in the shower.
Either way, I think it’s time to fumigate my turnout gear.
For those who might be interested, I have created a thread about the “tick burrowing” question in General Questions here
Well, I’m here to tell ya that you can put a big X on Minnesota and Wisconsin, too.
Last weekend, I picked off 4 wood ticks and one deer tick. Wood ticks don’t bug me (hee. get it?). I find 'em, I remove 'em.
Deer ticks, though, are more likely to carry Lyme. I don’t know for sure that wood ticks even carry Lyme. Do they?
Anyway, that was northern Minnesota. For a real tick-fest, just take a quick hike through some tall grasss along the Mississippi River on the Wisonsin side just south of Prescott. Wear shorts. When you come out you’ll think you’ve discovered a new medical condition: Multiple Mobile Mole syndrome.
You’ll still be finding them (or they, you) in your car a few days later.
Groovy.
