Tierney as a name; male, female or androgynous?

Is the first name Tierney primarily used for girls or boys? It is typically an Irish surname. It sounds male to me, but I have heard of girls with it as a first name. We have already name our first born son Tierney. I am just wondering if I have given him a girls name. Besides just a name that people cannot spell and think is tyranny.

Whenever I hear something that sounds like a “family” name (i.e., a last name converted for use into a first name), I always assume it is a female. In my experience, when males get “family” names, they usually are middle names and aren’t used as the day-to-day name (think John Fitzgerald Kennedy).

A former student of mine was (and I guess still is) named “Tierney”. She is a she. (she is also an up and coming singer, doing quite well.)
