The amazing, if somewhat predictable, Tiger Woods comes from 5 down to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational by a single stroke, with a birdie putt on 18. His main opponent, Sean O’Hair, dumps a +3 on the card to lose the tournament from a commanding position.
Knee? What knee?
Now if only they weren’t so damn drooly over Tiger during the broadcast…
Phil’s probelm hasn’t traditionally been with the shorter putts. He wobbles a good bit on the 10-footers, though. Grated it looks a lot worse when you miss a 5-footer after missing four 15-footers in a row.
Plus, he has been putting extremely well this season (and I’m not a huge Phil fan).
Phil has been putting well this season. But all flaws reveal themselves in Majors. The Masters is coming soon. Phil and Tiger both scramble very well. Tiger seems to be hitting more fairways now. That is key. For the pros more bogies are caused by bad drives than any other shot.
Actually, statistics won’t back you up here. Fairways hit is almost always a poor predictor of success/failure on the PGA tour. It’s GiR that is the better predictor of success, and the two (Fairways hit and GiR) are not actually related that much. You often see people with good fairways hit ratios who can’t get on the green, and people (like Tiger) who can’t hit a fairway to save their lives, who hit greens all the time from the rough.
Now, in the US Open, it’s a more important statistic. 4"+ rough tends to do that.
