I was never a fan of Tiger Stadium in Detroit. It was poorly designed and had too few restrooms. You could miss 2 innings going to take a leak. There were ,for many years, no cameras to keep you up on the action while you were squeezing past people to find a toilet. We really needed a new ball park. When you took your kid ,it was a 3 inning bathroom trip.
Now they are tearing it down. I suddenly feel the nostalgia that escaped me when so many others were decrying it’s demise. My dad took me to see Ted Williams play when I was a kid. I saw Mark Fidrrych ,Denny McClain, Mickey Lolich and so many others.
I had season tickets for many years in the Bleachers cCub for football. It was a group of die hard football fans that sat in an unprotected area . When it rained or snowed ,it rained or snowed on us. If anyone in our group left early they were serenaded with the Mickey Mouse Club theme song.
I actually remember when we used to win. We saw great defensive teams with the black and blue division battles . Night Train Laine, Bobby Laine, Joe Schmidt, Doak Walker ,Yale Larry, Christians Crew. We actually had very good teams before Ford took it over for money.
I guess I will miss it more than I thought.
I was introduced to baseball there-- I was 9-- which was also the last time the Tigers won the World Series-- 1984.
I do kind of miss the ol’ pea-green walls and floors…am I remembering that right? I’ll be driving by it today as I go to work, as I have for the past year or so. It’ll be wierd to see it in such disarray, I imagine.
On the other hand, this demolition is waaaaaaaay over due.
This old dinosaur has become a symbol, in my eyes, of Detroit itself: it was rooted in the past, falling apart, empty, an ugly eyesore, and no one knew what to do with it.
Now when visitors look out their windows from the MGM Grand, they won’t be like, “Isn’t that the old Tiger Stadium? Didn’t they stop using it almost 10 years ago? Why is it still there?”
So, they’re finally getting rid of Briggs Stadium? ‘bout freakin’ time!
Navin Field.
A decaying, empty stadium surrounded by a locked fence is the same thing whatever you want to call it.
Thats how I felt until I actually saw it being torn down.
