While I have a little sympathy for him, I would feel a lot sorrier for myself if I was seated beside him.
A big guy like that should know he has to plan ahead. This was a family emergency and he should have called ahead or inquired when he purchased the tickets. He might need two first class tickets or be limited to certain planes. The airline refunded his money so he saved that and has a perfect excuse not to have been there. He seemed quite sincere about his loss in not appearing. No way to drive from Gatwich to Toronto.
