If I were placing a bet today, it would be on Putin. But to offer up a name I haven’t seen yet, how about Elon Musk?
I just can’t see AOC/Pressley winning because this election isn’t anything like 2010 and the Tea Party. The Democrats are running an election based on the right candidates for the district. AOC’s win took place in a very thin primary right smack in the worst of the family separation news. Yes, you couldn’t avoid her on tv news for about 3 weeks after, but myself and many others think she showed that she wasn’t quite ready for prime time.
If Beto pulls a victory, then he’ll be in consideration. But, I still think it’ll be something related to Parkland as that’s been in the news as well as affecting policy most of the year.
I think it’ll be the Parkland kids, with David Hogg in the center of the picture.
I’d put Emma Gonzalez in the center with him.
And my nomination goes to “The Peaceful Protester”. This is apolitical, nonracial, nonreligious, etc.
Was not the best person. Since 2001, when they chose Giuliani over Bin Laden, they have almost exclusively chosen heroes (the one exception being Putin, who was not exactly a hero in 2007, but also not such a villain that people would have cancelled their subscriptions over the choice).
Um. The caravan?
It’s going to be Jamal Khashoggi since people in these topics usually post the last important newsmaker they remember.
I’d wager someone who represents the rise of (college educated) women in politics. I’m not sure if it’ll be Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, but it’ll probably be some college educated woman involved in politics, or a bunch of them.
One sad thing is that Mueller’s people have been deliberately extra quiet during the run up to the election. They don’t want to be accused of trying to influence it.
Hence, no new indictments, etc.
Shoot, this is info the voters should have.
Anyway, after next week expect a new wave of stuff out of the investigation, which would be good timing for TMPotY.
Yeah, I thought about him along with Elon Musk as my suggestion. But I’m not super familiar with Khashoggi story so I’m not sure it’s really “Person of the Year” material. It may very well be, but all I know is he was killed in the Saudi consulate.
I’m really hoping for Emma Gonzalez. Put all the Parkland kids on the cover, her in the center, with a nice big “WE CALL B S” overlay.
It’s Khashoggi and other murdered journalists.
I may be incorrect, but I don’t think Khashoggi was an “option” when this thread started.
I stand corrected. Good call!
Not all of them are dead. Of the ones named, only Khashoggi and the Capital Gazette victims are. Apparently (and, surprisingly, at least to me), they are the first posthumous Persons of the Year.
Thanks for the correction.
It won’t be Trump, because it would feed his ego too much.
Also, they look for something that will sell well.
Time will go for a generic category, like they have several times in the past.*
My guess: the Me Too movement, or trans people.
*“the Whistleblowers” 2002,
“the soldier” 2003,
"the computer"1982 ,
and even “You, the public” 2006
You’re too late: It’s killed and imprisoned journalists.
When was the last time it was a single person instead of a group of people?
OK, it just seems like a cop out when they choose a group. They been doing that a lot lately, Trump notwithstanding.
