Time Magazine 2018 Person of the Year

Eight of the last 12 have been individuals:

2016: Trump
2015: Angela Merkel
2013: Pope Francis
2012: Barack Obama
2010: Mark Zuckerberg
2009: Ben Bernacke
2008: Barack Obama
2007: Vladimir Putin

Only 2018, 2017, 2014 and 2011 have been groups of people.

So, three out of the last five.

I don’t really agree with the choice. This kind of reminds me when movies about Hollywood win an Oscar because the topic is particularly relevant to those voting.

It should have been the Parkland students.

OK sure, if that math’s better for you. Now how is Time Magazine choosing a group of people a cop out on an award that they created to recognize a person, group, idea or object that has done the most to influence the events of the year?

Because it is still called Person of the Year. It’s a cop out because they can’t make up their mind.

At least they’re not still calling it “Man of the Year” as they once did, although IMO the best thing would be to call it “Newsmaker of the Year”.

There is no way that Trump hasn’t generated the most news coverage of the year. Guy can’t write a tweet without 20 articles being written about it. I could also accept Muller.

I mean, you’re right, but I’m also okay with them bending the rules to prevent Trump from being able to call himself “Two Time Man Of The Year Award Winner.”

Across the pond, The Economist* awarded Boris Johnson “Idiot of the Year;” I DEMAND A RECOUNT.
*Well, one of their columnists did.

Both were on the short list, along with the Parkland kids and some others.
