Time out, everybody

OK, everybody needs to take a timeout, me included.

I’ve revoked the posting privileges of a few people. In the first case I concede I did so precipitously. A couple of subsequent cases occurred after I specifically said I didn’t want to hear any more kvetching. Be that as it may, I was ticked off when I did it and that’s not a good way to make decisions. So we’ll consider all of these suspensions through the weekend rather than permanent bans.

Since the question has come up a few times, let me explain where the board is headed. I’ll begin by saying where it’s NOT headed. It’s not meant to be a promotional vehicle for my book or me personally. As I intimated at the time, we had planned (and still plan) to start a related site with its own message board - it’ll be called Straight Dope Chicago. If it succeeds it’ll be the first of a series of city-focused Straight Dope sites. Since my book has a lot to do with Chicago, the SDC MB seemed like a logical place to put a discussion forum devoted to it - in fact I hoped the forum would broaden into a general discussion of city issues in Chicago. Unfortunately, as so often happens with these things, the SDC launch was delayed. Since publication of the book was imminent, I figured I’d open a forum on the SDMB temporarily. That wasn’t well received, to say the least, so I reorganized the forums as you see them now, with the book forum under “Side Conversations.” That seemed like a reasonable solution and I venture to say everyone was happy with it. I think I’m still going to move the book forum to the SDC eventually, where I expect it to morph into a general home repair/restoration forum, as has largely happened already.

The larger problem, which has persisted and led to today’s controversy, is the constant criticism of the board staff. I come in for a fair share of this and usually I don’t let it bother me. What got my goat today was people dumping on Jerry, our tech guy, and suggesting that he didn’t know what he was doing, was lazy, a smartass, or what have you. That was totally uncalled for. I’ve worked with Jerry a long time. He’s a smart guy, a hard worker, and notwithstanding his occasionally cynical exterior has a heart of gold. He’s been trying to get the Straight Dope site upgraded all summer, a job made way tougher by the fact that these are dismal times in the newspaper business and virtually his entire staff has been let go. He’s been working late nights and weekends to get the upgrade working smoothly and it’s not done yet. A lot of custom code has to get ported and there appear to be design limitations in the latest bulletin board software version that we’re going to have to figure out how to deal with. For people to suggest that Jerry is a slacker or incompetent … all I’m saying is, don’t ever, ever do this. I just see red, and that’s not a good thing.

My feelings about the mods and admins are much the same. I remind you yet again that they’re volunteers. I couldn’t run the board without them. I vet all of them personally before signing them up and on the whole I think they do a terrific job handling trying situations with wit and grace. Nonetheless they’re human and they make mistakes. We handle most disciplinary-type decisions collegially; this generally avoids the worst problems. Occasionally we change our minds after the fact, as I’ve done just now. Nonetheless it inevitably happens that some users think they’ve been treated unfairly, and over time we’ve accumulated a small but vocal group that is quick to pile on and complain whenever things aren’t to their liking.

So we need to come to an understanding. I fully recognize the strength and loyalty of the SDMB community, and how important it is to many of you. The quality of discussion on the board generally speaking is far above what you typically find on the net, and we hope that will continue. Nonetheless everyone needs to recognize that this is a commercial enterprise, not a commune or a coop. We make the rules and we expect people to abide by them. We appreciate your comments and suggestions and try to accommodate reasonable requests, but this is not a democracy and administration of the board is not subject to vote. Above all we expect you to remain civil, both to each other and to us. For the most part we think we’re easygoing and not easy to rile, but when we think things have gotten out of hand and tell you to knock it off, we expect you to comply. In particular, please don’t badger or abuse the staff - this will get you thrown out pretty quick.

That brings me to a final point. We don’t expect or want the SDMB per se to change all that much - in fact, a lot of our plans involve expanding the SDMB concept to other venues. However, one thing that probably WILL change now that we’ve gone to free posting is that the board will get busier - Jerry tells me this is already occurring. That means we’ll have less time to spend on small matters, and we may be less tolerant of over-the-top behavior than we have been in the past. We’ll try to give you fair warning whenever we decide to rein things in; nonetheless, once those warnings have been made, take heed.

So that’s it. I’m sorry I behaved rashly earlier. I’ll leave this thread open for a while for comments, but as always the discussion should remain civil.

Good show, Ed. I think a lot of us, myself included, could use a cup of tea and a lie down right now before anything else that might be regretted later gets said or done.

Thank you. No, really; it means a lot. Have a good weekend, and don’t let us hooligans stress you out too much.

I guess I picked a good day not be at the computer.

Time outs are a good thing.

Unless you’re Chris Webber.

Ed, I am glad you reconsidered on the bannings. That is great.

I am sorry for the hard time you have been getting and I agree that people should not be piling on **Jerry **when he gives us updates. I know I want the updates, so making it unpleasant for him annoys me as it makes it less likely he will give us updates.

Jim

I appreciate your mentioning the attacks on Jerry because they pretty much explain the references to reprimands for “jr. IT’ing” that I saw here and there in these discussions.

Also that thing about extending this into other venues is very interesting. If you can fill us in, after things get less crazy around here and you have the time, I’d appreciate it.

Very good…thanks for clearing the air on this.

I think it was obvious, having stumbled across an ATMB thread or two, that it was your loyalty coming through. Thanks, Ed.

(… and not to be repetitious, but Jerry, much appreciated, Amigo.)

Ed, I’m gonna kiss you right on the lips!

Running this board is a thankless job, since most of us are rugged individuals and therefore total jackasses most of the time. I so wanted to tell you off this morning, but a bit of sober (I know! It scared me too!) reflection made me see that I was over-reacting to something that was already a trainwreck. Thank you. That’s it. Nobody says it enough around here.

I will personally pay for any masseuse you feel inclined to go to, Ed, and I’ll pick up your bar tab too.

Thank you. I’m sorry if this board is often a disappointment to you. It is not a disappointment to me. I love this community and I am very glad to be here.

Thanks for keeping an open mind Ed.

I can tell the upgrade isn’t going smoothly, I work in IT and know that sometimes things that should be working, don’t.

In the meantime hopefully it won’t become Mods vs. Members around here.

Thank you, Ed.

Like you said, this forum is very important to some of us. I’ve learned to think for myself and that, alone, is so valuable to me. The fact that I even entertained the thought of leaving here was unimaginable to me less than 24 hours ago.

Today was a very bad day for me. I was feeling paranoid about some shinanigans at my job, I had had enough of the unfairness of US politics and then the crap happening here had me so worked up. I was so sad that my one place of sanity (okay, while sometimes insane) was in termoil. The mere thought of leaving the place and people I’ve come to know was so upsetting to me.

I appreciate you taking responsibility for a rash decision, as it seems so rare these days.

Really? Because that’s how I use it. Well, not to promote MY books, there being someone whose name is on the cover and who does more work and makes more money from them, but yeah, a bit of self-promotion is what a message board is about. I mean, nobody REALLY goes online to read Bricker or Dio’s bloviations, do they?

In other words, thanks, man.

And another shout-out to Jerry. He’s a good guy who takes far too much shit far better than I would.

So, can we go back to discussing Sarah Palin?

Thanks, Ed, you’ve put a very professional face on it. I feel much better about the situation now, and I agree that chilling out is much in order.

For the record, while I have always regarded good-natured griping about the board’s performance as one of the charming aspects of this site’s personality, I completely agree that it’s base ingratitude to personally insult or attack Jerry for it. That, and I honestly can’t understand why anybody would have been complaining about the Barn House forum.

Everybody just has a day sometime or other, Ed.

There are some posters who basically show up here only to post about how awful it. is. IMO they, and anybody who keeps taking shots at Jerry, pretty much ask for what they get.

I think some people accepted intellectually that the board would be a bit wonky for a while, but they still melt down a bit in frustration when it times out, etc. ::shrugs:: Nobody can win 'em all every time. This too shall pass.

Thanks, Ed.

I hadn’t even noticed the bannings today, to be honest, but the kvetching got on my nerves days ago. It must have been a magnitude worse when you actually know the people being harassed.

Good. I knew it was just a bad dream.

This place gets more and more like Dallas every day.

Ed, you’ve wrote a book (well, not counting that Know Everything one, heh), started minding a forum dedicated to it with answering questions here and there, helped make this board upgraded and allowed it to go to free posting again, and answered who knows how many PMs and emails…all in the last two weeks or so. I’m sure that would make any normal person a bit stressed out, even [del]Ce[/del] Ed Zotti himself. You’ve earned a break and should take it easy a bit, you’re only human. It’s great insight that you’ve reconsidered a desicion or two made today. Very classy.

Thank you for that. I appreciate it.

Glad to hear it, Ed. I withdraw my earlier complaints regarding the bannings.

As far as the moderation, tech support, etc., I don’t have any complaints to withdraw. I’ve always felt you guys do a superb job running this place, and greatly appreciate Jerry’s efforts to keep everything running smoothly.

Keep up the good work.
