Obviously, the Pit is the place to go if you want to pit another doper, but that’s not all it’s there for. Right now, most of the threads there (airlines, one about coffee, another about pants) seem to be non SDMB related rants.

Yes, but if the stuff makes you angry, and I mean really angry, as in “Don’t make me angry–you wouldn’t like me when I’m angry,” then it belongs in the Pit. People have always pitted things that pissed them off, from impertinent waiters to bigotry. The threads in the Pit don’t seem all that different than the way they were years ago when I first started reading, honestly.

The Pit is the place to flame, if needed. Just about any topic is subject to flaming. It is ALSO the place to discuss administration and moderation of the SDMB. Originally, the Pit was ONLY a flame forum. People were posting arguments about how the SDMB is run in ATMB, and 1) that’s really for technical problems and 2) the threads turned into flamefests anyway. So we decided to put all commentary on how the place is run in the Pit in the first place.
I’m not sure where the ‘flaming’ is in a thread called “Pit things that make you sad”, but I guess that’s just me.
Anyway, you have stumbled on the answer then. Change the Pit forum description.
Remove the word ‘other’, and possibly add a comma. Like this:
“This is the place for all complaints, and discussion regarding administration of the SDMB.”
That way, it would be clear you were talking about two subjects–
- all complaints
- discussion regarding administration of the SDMB
The way it currently reads, there is only one subject
- all complaints and other discussion regarding administration of the SDMB.
The meaning is different.
Not a huge deal, to be sure, but it would be a step in the direction of accuracy. Truth in advertising, and all.
Alternatively, we could put in some sort of membership filter that kept out people who could not figure these things out on their own after months of participation. 
You might as well move to a cave in a mountain and live off grasshoppers and morning dew. This would be a lonely place.
Alternatively, you could post accurate forum descriptions in a message board (allegedly) fighting ignorance, one would think.

You are about 20 times more likely to participate at least once in a Pit thread about a topic unrelated to the Board than in one that addresses the Board. It’s really clear that you know that the Pit is for complaints about the administration *and *other topics.

From what I’ve read, MPSIMS started out as just one thread, but it’s had its very own forum for years now. So what motivates the MPSIMS-ers to invade the Pit with even more of that crap?
