Timing question: When are sigs and searches permanent?
I was trying to see if you could search for something that’s in a person’s sig, when I realized two counterintuitive things (I didn’t say unexplained- I have enough computer skills to explain them, but I’m asking about TIMING):
When you change your profile sig the change shows up on posts that were completed hours earlier that day. Yet posts from prior days show the old sig. So what time does a sig “lock in”?
I find a search won’t return the posts I’ve just been making. Again, do you know the timing? Is there and index build every hour, every night, or is this just a slow-day phenom?
Thanks if you know. No biggie if you don’t. No need to look it up just for me.
AFAIK, sigs are never “locked in”. If you modify your sig in the present tense, I think it goes through and eventually changes it in all the earlier entries. At least, that’s how it was with UBB, maybe it’s different with vB. I haven’t checked. I’m sure there’s some good tech reason for this which if somebody had an extra 3 hours or so, they could explain to me, if I cared deeply, which I don’t, so relax, tech people.
And the reason why it takes a while is that it takes a while, to catch up. At any given moment there are probably maybe 1,000 posts in the pipeline, they all have to wait their turn to move through.
As far as Search not returning your posts that you KNOW you just made, I think, again, it’s just a question of literally thousands of posts waiting their turn in the pipeline. Eventually it all does catch up.
I know I’ve seen people change their sigs within one thread, because that’s exactly the effect I was doing my search for.
Has anyone done that (maybe before the latest system conversion)?
For the other question, “pipelines” are nice, I was hoping for numbers. In the case of this thread, it took 3 hours. This is an unlikely amount of time for any DBSW that updates indices as it goes, so it seems like the batch update variety.
I’m not too sure this is what you are asking, but, prior to the change over (4/28/00), the sigs were written into the post data itself. Therefore, that sig in that post stayed the same no matter if the sig changed later.
Now, the sig is part of the user data. If the sig changes, then it changes across all posts. You can’t search on the sig because it isn’t really part of the post anymore.
Does that make sense?
As far as the search problem, I’ve not seen it. I searched for Cecil’s posts just in time to find that he had just finished posting. Talk about timing. So, I don’t know anything about that problem.
