I hope this doesn’t get me run out of town on a rail, but I am puzzled about something.
With the federal execution of Timothy McVeigh, there was massive outcry here on these boards. Death Penalty threads, anti-death penalty threads, debates, rants, questions.
Well, this morning, Juan Raul Garza was executed. Same place. Same federal government. Not the same response.
What gives?
It would seem, to this unseasoned newbie, that the anti-DPers would be all over this story. You’ve got a minority (he was born in Mexico, but was a US citizen) being executed by the hated feds. He “only” killed one person (though he order the execution of two others). He showed remorse.
He was practically everything that McVeigh was not (note: do not interpret that statement to mean that I approve of his actions - I most certainly do not!).
Yet, despite this being the second federal execution in as many weeks…nothing.
I’m confused. Is this simply a matter of everyone being burned out on DP/anti-DP topics? Is this a case of situational ethics? Is it a case of no-one really gives a damn, since it’s not high-profile enough? Is it that no-one even knew about it? Is it something else entirely?
Please understand that I am not trying to pick a fight here, or trying to stir up trouble (especially since, in all likelihood, I wouldn’t have participated in the “missing threads” anyway). I am merely curious as to why no-one seems to be getting worked up about this, especially considering some of the things some dopers do get worked up over.
I’ve read some very strongly-opinionated posts regarding the DP here, and I know there are posters with very strong convictions when it comes to this topic. So why the silence?
I was not sure where to put this…for any Mods listening, feel free to move it to where-ever you think it should be. I started here, just in case anyone wants to tell me to shut my yap and stay out everyone’s business
