I’d like to try to tip my way onto First Class next time I fly, perhaps by slipping the ticket agent a $100 when I check in. Is this illegal? Is it frowned upon, what with September 11th and all? Is it even likely to work?
TIA

The way to first class is to pay the First class fare.

You really need to ask?
I’ve flown on airlines where you had to tip the ticket agent to get any seat.
It’s probably not illegal, but in the current evironment, trying to bribe your way to get a seat closer to the cockpit door is not the best idea I’ve heard.
I’d suggest joining the airline’s frequent flyer program. Then get to the gate long enough before the flight that the agent isn’t particularly busy and ask if there are any upgrades available. If a little money changes hands, then that’s between the two of you. Not being an airline employee though, I can’t guarantee anything.
If you’re a frequently flyer, or even just friendly, they might upgrade you just for asking IF they have the room. I agree that in the current climate, slipping money over the counter could easily be considered suspicious behavior.
