Tipping the tow truck driver

My car stalled today driving home. So, after much gnashing of teeth and phone calling and juggling the kids etc., I called AAA and waited for the tow truck. They said inside an hour, and after 65 minutes, I was in the van set to drive away when the tow truck turns the corner. After hooking up my car, I was about to head the wrong way on the freeway cause I’m an idiot with a very poor sense of direction, but the driver waited for me just past the on ramp and I got back around in front of him, dropped the car off at the shop where it started and ran fine. Anyway, in the past I haven’t tipped tow truck drivers, but this time the guy really did save me many miles and thus some money. I gave him $5.

What would you have done in this situation? What have you tipped in the past?

I’ve always tipped the tow/assist guys sent by AAA. Well, at least since I got old (smart) enough to understand that it helps, or at least can’t hurt.

Typically (not that it happens that often) between $5 (for a quick jump start) to $20 (changing a tire by the side of the highway in the rain - hey, the lug nuts were on too tight for me to loosen myself).

As I said, who knows if it helps any, but it can’t hurt, and it’s not that much money in the grand scheme of things, so seems worth it to me.
