It can be general advice, like “Take time out for your friends and family” and “Don’t sweat the small stuff”, or it can be practical advice, like “Drink 4 glasses of water a day” or “Go for a run each morning”.
(Anyone who says “Wear sunscreen” will get an arrow implanted up their butt.)
My tip: Go outside at least once a day, for at least half an hour. Fresh air is one of the most important things anyone can have.
A buddy of mine recently had this fight with his girlfriend. She was complaining that nothing ever seemed to go right in her life. This is the conversation that followed:
“Well, you have a boyfriend who you love who loves you back, right?”
“Well, yeah…”
“And your car started this morning?”
“Yeah…”
“And you got to eat Chinese food, which you love, for lunch?”
“Yeah…”
“You didn’t get into any car accidents today, right?”
“Right…”
“And you got a good night’s rest last night.”
“Okay…”
“Well. It seems to me a whole lot of stuff has gone right for you today.”
Make a long list of things you want to do in your life – places you want to see, things you want to accomplish, books you want to read, music you want to master or own, etc. Keep the list where you can see it or find it easily.
Study it. Review it. Revise it. Check things off as you do them! Do a little bit of something all the time design toward getting you toward one of your goals. (Apply for your passport, buy a book on Paris, narrow your list of universities, take skiing lessons, write a letter of application to Sundance…)
One of the worst feelings, imho, is the feeling of guilt. Even a slight feeling of guilt you can get by not having petted your [non]purring cat enough.
So, try to live without guilty feelings.
Which is impossible… so my next suggestion is: Don’t ever take yourself too seriously. Mock yourself and laugh at your antics.
