I have always been pretty good at PC FPS games. But playing Halo 3 on the 360 I am mediocre at best and sometimes I feel outright terrible (I am still new to 360 and Halo 3 so a large part of it is just a need for practice). I find it far more challenging and sometimes frustrating playing an FPS with a console controller than on the PC.
I’m already starting to master the beat-down technique and when it comes down to it, I win more beat-down situations than I lose. My big problem is that I completely fail at grenade tossing. I am constantly getting blown up and stuck by enemy grenades, but I don’t think I’ve killed anyone with a 'nade yet despite throwing them all the time. They also seem to really slow me down and if I take the time to toss one while I am receiving fire, I am dead before I can start pulling off rounds of my own. Yet other players seem to be simultaneously blowing me up and shooting me with ease.
Any Halo pros out there? First of all, where do you set the controller sensitivity? Where’s the ideal sweet spot to aim when tossing grenades? Any other tips to not suck so bad? Yes I could slink back to PC FPS games where I already know I have skills but I want to conquer this, damnit!
1: Learn how to use the battle rifle. 4 bursts can kill if you are accurate and get head shots.
2: Know the maps inside out. You should know where the nearest good weapon/plasma grenades are no matter where you spawn on any map.
3: Grenades. Practice sticking. I practiced by playing Non Ranked and just tried to kill people by sticking them (There’s an achievement for killing 5 in a game IIRC). You also should be anticipating people’s actions and putting a grenade in their way. I love placing grenades on the ground so that when someone turns a corner they walk onto a grenade. If it doesn’t kill them then you can kill them easily with a shot or two to the head.
4: Head shots. Always go for the head.
5: Be aware of what is happening around you. If a team mate is in a fight, help. If a team mate has just been killed the guy that did it is weak, if you can get there, pick him off. In non team games look for people fighting. Grenades can get you some nice double kills or more when placed into the middle of a mêlée.
6: If you can manage it, change the layout to bumper jumper. This will give you much more control while jumping as you don’t have to move you finger of the controller.
7: I wouldn’t go too high on the sensitivity. I use 1 above medium and have no problems.
8: Watch and learn from better players. If you get killed by a clever technique or use of the environment then try to learn the technique yourself.
9: Practice, practice, practice.
The great thing about Halo 3 is that you can watch a replay of every game, from the viewpoint of all the participants, see what tactics and hiding spot they use.
Not me. I’m a Commander Grade 3. My hightest true skill is 39(on Lone Wolf), I know it’s just one away from a Colonel but everytime I get to 39 I lose and go to 38 and I wimp out and go back to non-ranked.
Tag is xx yoj1mbo xx and I’m on the aaa_smdb list but haven’t played in a while. I’ve been hankering to start playing seriously again though.
Yep that’s what mine looked like when I was at about that rank.
I’ll say it again. Battle rifle is the #1 tool you need to master.
Your BR kills is 1.31% versus 31.8% for me. I say this not to “big” myself up but to show a major difference. You’ve plenty of time though. I’ve played something like 1700 more games than you
I started just going from the hip and as I got more comfortable used the zoom more. Mostly on large maps like Valhalla or Sandtrap where you not in a one on one fire fight almost all the time. And remember to lead your shots when people are moving. Aim just in front of the head to take the flight time of the bullets into account.
Okay, you want tips? I can get you tips. The beat-down solution isn’t anything you can necessarily fix. Bungie updated the title a while back, and with it, it “fixed” some of the beatdown problems. The problems occurred when people got into a situation you describe, but with vastly different connections. Because of the nature of playing online, the two moments don’t happen simultaneously, yet it has to be rendered closely to that on your screen. The compromise s that in those situations, both people kill each other. Now, if you’re losing close battles, my number one bit of advice is to stay away. Don’t let it come to that. Use the grenades, wear their shields down, and take them out. Look at what I use. The number one weapon I use is the battle rifle (33% of my kills), the sniper rifle is number 2 (18% of my kills) beatdowns (12% of my kills), assault rifle (9.45% of my kills), and then frag grenades (5.28% of my kills).
Grenades go off about two seconds after they hit a solid object. That’s the bit of information you’re missing. If someone is coming up a ramp at you and you know it, bounce the grenade off the side of the wall, so when they get to the top, the grenade has taken their shields down completely and you can finish them off quickly.
When I was playing a lot, my sensitivity was as high up as it goes. My sensitivity now is a 4 or a 5. I can’t turn as fast as I’d like, but it keeps my battle rifle aim steadier.
Also, don’t go rushing into fights. You’re asking to get crushed if you walk into someone’s trap.
Listen for callouts. People may be telling you where weak opponents are, and you don’t know it. “One shot, top gold” means that there’s someone on the top of the gold lift in Guardian that has one shot left before death.
Headphones are salvation. I won my copy of Halo 3 in an online tournament, so I used the money that I’d have used to get Halo 3 for nifty headphones. It REALLY helps to hear people before they hear you. It’s also nice to have all the chat and noise coming through that so you don’t annoy anyone else, too.
My controller layout is default, though I’ve heard a lot of people really like Bumper Jumper. I’d consider switching if I weren’t so used to default. As you can see, I’ve got no problems at all kicking ass as things are.
Online games are all about teamwork, and there might not be another game online in which teamwork is more important than Halo 3.
Shoot me a game request or hop into a game of mine. I play with some good people that have no problem carrying you or getting you through the ropes.
The battle rifle is probably the most important and versatile weapon. To answer willthekittensurvive?, you’ll usually want to stay zoomed out of your battle rifle, because the hitbox is bigger. What that means is that when it’s not zoomed in, you get more leeway because of the very nature of playing online/lag. Start up zoomed in to get a shot on them/if you need to ping a sniper to get them zoomed out.
If you want to put work in, I can get you straightened out.
My favorite is a 1-2 punch with the Shotgun. Hit them with a shotgun round and usually one bash to the head will take them out. You can do this very fluidly. If it doesn’t take them out they are really soft.
The battle-rifle really is key, the carbine and the battle-rifle are essentially the same weapon. I like to switch around.
Learn to jump on the hood of a Ghost, it’s a badass maneuver and you can immediately run your opponent over.
If you are on a level with force shield doors, you can just stand on the other side waiting for your pursuer and tag them in the face when they come through.
Otherwise, you’re right, it’s just about practice.
