I have a window unit AC that I want to clean & get ready for regular use so it will run as efficiently as possible. I live in NYC & once the hot weather hits I’ll use it pretty much all the time, so my electric bill basically doubles. Ideally I guess I’d take the thing out, lay it in my driveway & spray a hose into it, but I live in a 4th floor walkup & don’t really have that option. Whatever I do has to be done while the unit remains in the window. I clean the filter regularly, but the coils still get pretty dusty rapidly. I’ll periodically take an old toothbrush & clean them out as best I can, & thought about trying some of that compressed air in a can people use to clean computer keyboards. I’ve tried to vacuum the coils, but that doesn’t seem to work too well. It’s and LG 8,000 BTU that I bought new about 6 years ago if that’s any help.
Thanks in advance for any advice!
You can buy “coil cleaner” that really seems to do a good job of removing caked-on lint from thw coils. Check your local hardware store for it.
Not sure why you can’t just bring it inside to clean. Window shakers are usually easily removed from the metal shell they sit in, unless it’s one of those small all-plastic units, in which case you should be able to just drag the whole thing into the room.
Thanks for the idea, I hadn’t really thoughta that because I have very limited space & thought it might be too much mess & hassle, but maybe I’ll give that a shot. If I can slide the innards out of the chassis maybe I can get it into the bathtub & use the handheld shower to rinse everything down. Thanks also beowulf for the coil cleaner tip, hadn’t known about that & will look for it.
