A thirty dollar tip is the largest tip I’ve ever left, it was at a steakhouse where we held my MIL’s birthday party. My sister in laws kids left a huge mess, so we left almost as much tip as what our meal for the four of us cost that night.

A very large tip last Valentine’s Day. It’d be crass for me to tell you the exact amount. Someone posts here who was there.
Most of my friends and I have worked in restaurants. When we go out as a group, we are generally 12-15 people - with appetizers, drinks, and desserts. We expect a certain level of service and, in return tip obscenely well. We acknowledge that in some restaurants we may choose, we may well be the only table that a waitperson may have that evening, we take our time at these events - we love to eat and we enjoy each others company, and we expect the service to consistent throughout the meal. Typically, we tip around 20%-25% for very good service and only 15% if it’s average.
If the service is sub-standard, I assure you, the manager has already heard about it from us before the check has shown up, but we tend to leave 10%-15% anyway. Everyone is entitled to have a bad day at work now and again. I know if I have a bad day at work, I still expect to get paid for having been there. I also expect to hear about it from my boss. Hence, telling the manager about the situation.
I didn’t answr the OP…
I think the largest we have left as a group is around $80.00 - on a $400.00 tab.
If the gratuity is added in to the total, we usually tip above and beyond that if the service warrants.
Keep in mind - we are usually a large and demanding, but very good-natured party.
The largest tip I personally ever left was $150 on a $400 bill, but this was for my wedding dinner at a restaurant I worked at at the time, son they gave me a good deal on the price of food (and some free champagne) and some really good service.
Usually, I will tip 20% plus a couple of bucks for rounding purposes as the highest I tip. I want to tip well, but I have no financial ability or need to be one of those who makes a servers life. Maybe when I’m rich one day…
When I waited on tables, I once received a $120 tip on a table with only a $350 bill. There was an automatic 15%, they knew this, and the doubled it on purpose.
Yer pal,
Satan
Uh, I think you might have been taken there…
My uncle once received a baby grand piano as a tip.
This was at the Four Seasons in New York.
When I worked at Pizza Hut, I got a few tips that were higher than the bill… like a $20 tip for a $12 check… I got a $20 tip for delivering a medium pizza once…
NOt so high in themselves, but ratio-wise pretty good.

Proportionally, $200 on a $20 drink tab (that’s one I got, not one I gave to someone). This was from a guy who won the Lotto and just wanted to spread the wealth. His minimum - even for a glass of water - was $50. Those were the days.
Highest I’ve tipped is 100% for service above-and-beyond.
Lowest I’ve tipped is $.25 for a waiter who disappeared after taking the drink orders.
One of the bartenders at the restaurant I worked at was an extremely cute blond girl. I was there when a guy left her $100 – on a $2.25 beer!
The best tip I have made was abour 35% on a huge group meal. That was great.

Was bartending a few years ago and we kept the place open for a small party including a relatively famous musician. Everybody drank a bunch and when they left, one of the guys in the party peeled off four hundos and left it on the bar (to cover the maybe $100-200 in drinks). Took it to my manager to settle the tab, and he said, “Keep it all, man, I did lines with(relatively famous musician).” So all $400 belonged to me. Great tip.

Well, blessed is just about everyone with a vested interest in the status quo, as far as I can tell.
This is one of my favorite stories! Sweet!
I promise it is relative to the OP…
It goes like this:
My senior year in High School, my best friend and I doubled to Prom. We called and made reservations at Petroleum Club, a very snazzy expensive restaurant. We got rooms at the Hyatt, and said we were in town for some meetings and galas and stuff, so that we could use our fakes to get drinks.
(We all looked old enough to pull it off.)
Anyway,my best friends dad is really rich. The man has money coming out of his ass. So, as a graduation present, he gives us his credit card to pay for dinner. He says he doesn’t care how much dinner is, so long as that’s all we used it for. We got the limo from my folks.
So, off we go. We’re havin’ a good time, and we’re already half in the bag, don’t have to worry about driving, and it’s only 8:00!
We go to dinner, and the menu is ridiculous. They don’t have any prices listed, as if you have to ask how much it costs, you can’t afford it. I am sure that water was like $21.95 a glass.
After appetizers, before dinner drinks, entrees, deserts, after dinner drinks, cigars and drinks and coffee and all, the bill came to $671.21! I swore I would remember the exact amount for the rest of my days as a tribute to debauchery.
We left the staff that attended to our every whim a $200.00 dollar tip.
All told: $871.21 for four people to have dinner on prom night. Damn.
And that’s the biggest tip I’ve ever left/heard of/been a party to.
One of the best nights of my life, I wish I could do again and again every year on my birthday.
Wish in one hand, shit in the other…

While working at a restaurant/bar as a cocktail waitress, a wedding party came in. The short story is:
Drunk groom
Pissed off bride
Flirty groom (to me)
REALLY pissed off bride
So he leaves me a $100 tip for about $50 worth of drinks. He absolutely insists that I take it, so I slip over to his wife to give it back. She is so pissed at him that she very angrily tells me to “Just fucking keep it” and storms off with her new hubby.
Ahhhh…young love…
