From what I’ve been able to dig up, the plane was a Tucano S-312. I guess if you’re going to die in a plane crash, you may as well do it in style.
Oh. Always loved his work for Krull, Willow and Braveheart and he really polished up Corman’s goodhearted seven samurai in space saga, Sador.
Sad to hear he’s gone.
Damn - he was definitely a good’un, and his list of scoresis impressive.
Damn. As I was just writing not long ago in another thread, his opening score for The Rocketeer is my current favorite.
One of my favourite pieces of music. Ride of the Fire Mares.
When I was a kid I had a cassette tape of the “Wrath of Khan” soundtrack that I played many, many, times. One of these days I’ll get a cd of “Avatar”.
What a loss of talent.
Oh, jeez, no. He was up there with John Williams for me.
Say what you will about Titanic–the score was out of this world. (All right, I admit it–I like “My Heart Will Go On,” even if it is overblown.) And the Braveheart score as well. (He seemed in his element with Celtic-themed stuff.)
But the first thing I knew him for was his scores for Star Treks II and III. I wish they’d kept him for the entire movie series.
I thought Jerry Goldsmith and Leonard Rosenman did terrific work, too, but it’s a little sad they got Oscar nods for the franchise but he didn’t.
Other great scores from Horner not already mentioned: GLORY, SNEAKERS, SEARCHING FOR BOBBY FISCHER, THE NAME OF THE ROSE, THE LAND BEFORE TIME, A BEAUTIFUL MIND.
RIP
Apollo 13 was also one hell of a soundtrack. One of the few movies where I will sit through the entire end credits just to hear the accompanying music.
That sucks. He composed one of the greatest pieces in modern movie history, Bishop’s Countdown. Probably been used in more movie trailers than anything else…
The way I heard it, they hired Horner for Star Trek II because they could no longer afford Jerry Goldsmith.
By the time Star Trek V was ready for production, they hired Goldsmith because they could no longer afford James Horner. His career really took off.
One of my favorite composers, I’ve got most of his scores. Dammit.
Titanic was one of my favorite on his composition.
Beaten to it. I saw that movie over 30 years ago, and that theme is still stuck in my head.
A very talented composer. Here are two of my favorite scores of his:
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, of course: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan [Complete Motion Picture Sountrack] - YouTube
The Civil War drama Glory: - YouTube
He also had a cameo in STII:TWOK - scroll down here: James Horner | Memory Alpha | Fandom
May he rest in peace.
