Who is behind the famous and hilarious joke “Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side!” I have heard several different answer and I would like to hear some more.
Don’t know. Elementary school students have been telling it as far back as I can remember.
Poul Anderson mentions it in “Three Hearts and Three Lions”, published in 1953, and he implies that it was part of schoolyard folklore since time immemorial. He also gives an alternate punchline: “It’s too far to go around.” (also an existential interpretation of the symbolism of the chicken and the road, but that would take too long to type. Find the book and read it–it’s a good one!)
You mean it’s not Henny Youngman?
