I’m not a well-respected poster, but I am ashamed at how much I have enjoyed reading this thread.
Please tell me you did that on purpose.
-Myron
You forgot to suggest that she would be a hero for doing so. Especially if her child had a terminal illness that required her constant care.
manhattAn, damn, uh, gosh diggely-darn it! manhattan!
This is the first time I’ve ever been quoted by a moderator.
I’ve arrived.
All hail me.
Heh. The thread that the OP is bitchin’ about is now on page 1 of MPSIMS again (it wasn’t a pit thread as stated in the OP), probably due to a link in this thread. Someone else posted the link, not Supenderzzz - after all, if she’d provided it, maybe a mod would have closed it.
Oh, c’mon. This is honestly the first time you’ve seen a bunch of longtime posters tear someone apart? You could practically set your watch to how often these sorts of threads crop up.
And, FTR, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a poster more deserving of this treatment, outside of blatant trolls or sock puppets. And I’m not ashamed to say so.
Watch your language mister, or Lynn Bodini is gonna come in here and give you a warning.
(I have a feeling my mod-quoting is coming, Thunder)
[sub]I have chocolate. Lots of it.[/sub]
And you’ve gotten it. You’ve been treated as though you were a responsible adult, and mocked and scorned when you proved not to be. Deal.
Since this has been moved to the pit, I might as well add this gem from another thread I noticed the other day:
This was in response to someone else in the ‘Old People Suck’ thread, as she was making a counter point to someone else’s post.
Let me be the first to stumble over myself trying to graciously thank her for being the only member here with such a broad horizon who can point out to the ignorant masses that there are, indeed, different perspectives! My, oh my, how have we ever done without her?!?
Manny, were you thinking of this post when you said that?
I’m sorry. Being (it has been asserted) a sort of “sicky sweet” person, (this was NOT a positive definition, I just KNOW it…phony wasn’t stated, but was explicitely implied) I feel the need to identify the people who threatened Suspenderzzz’s child so I can smother them with platitudes. Anyone care to link me?
I’m very pleased that some individuals are so threatened by one person’s having a post closed that they decide to spend precious timewhning about the injustice. LOL! Lordamercy, as they say down South. I am concerned about some of you, because I do sense a definite air of desperation here. Y’all don’t get much attention at home in your alleged nonconformist bliss, do you? I certainly didn’t spend any time thinking about the SDMD!
If you are so certain that your lifestyle is good, what do you care what some anonymous poster on the internet thinks?? I tell you what: I got you thinking. Good. I got you spending your time thinking about me! Gosh, I’m blushing. All this for me? I almost feel like I’m back in NYC, where I was such a threat to the non-conformists I pretty much got the above type of reaction all the time. It only reconfirmed that I was doing something right. (Ole NYC has been making a few “flattering” headlines of it’s own lately, has it not. We have to take these types of elitist views with the utmost skepticism.)
see, m’dear, Threads here are routinely closed when they are answered. I asked you a question. You said you were not going to answer. In effect, you answered me and there was nothing else to be said, now was there? So I requested that the thread be closed. VIA E-MAIL. I gave my explanations and apparently they believed I had a valid reason to have it locked. On their terms.
However, I did not want your pathetic efforts and your anticipation for me to make an appearance go wasted. That would be just cruel. See, I do have a heart.
I just don’t understand why you care so much if a thread is open. It simply means that more of us are clamouring for YOU! I mean, you would be such the loser if you cared.
Carry on, my adoring fans. My hausfraian, conformist life is calling.
Since the Divine Miss S is probably just baiting again, why don’t we all obey our own house rule and DNFTT?
Oh yeah, somebody asked about if there are guidelines on closing threads at the request of the OP. Having no official inside information but using purely my own sense, I would think the following applies:
-
Board violations get the threads closed and the offender sanctioned/banned.
-
If posters say something stupid or indenfensible, then request the thread be closed because they want to avoid response, the mods are probably going to tell them “Reap what you sow.”
-
If the OP has some specific reason (not the above) why a thread should be closed, they will probably honor the request. Especially if the thread is attracting attention and the OP would rather it die.
-
Sometimes discussions take off without the OP’s control. Say there’s a hijack, or someone else takes an offshoot of the original post and goes on the same topic, the thread can continue without the OP continuing to post/read. Especially likely in GD threads. You give up the point or change your mind, but someone else still wants to argue the point.
Perhaps there are other ways of looking at it, this is just my cursory observation. Note that closing a thread is an extra effort, and if the thread is dying anyway (say on page three of GQ), they may just let it go away quietly.
This assumes the mods/admins are aware of the request to close the thread. If the OP wants the thread closed, then they must make the extra effort to make sure the request is received. Saying in the bottom of the thread “close this please” may not get it done, because the mods may not read that thread. A direct email to one or both of the mods is better, and the “report this post” function is a convenient way to do that. However, it was pointed out that email takes time. The mods aren’t sitting 24 hrs a day at their computers waiting for email notifications. So it takes time for them to check the mail. Give them a couple of days. Also, it was mentioned that responding to the “report this post” email is more difficult than just hitting reply. This makes it less likely they will respond with an email even if they take the suggested advice.
And most importantly, be nice to the mods. If the post is not in violation of board rules, then the request to close the OP is a request, and the mods can choose to honor it or not. Just like any other request in any other part of life (“requests” from your SO in the military perhaps withstanding). If you accuse them and get snippy with them and otherwise annoy them, they are much less likely to want to oblige you.
Here in the U.S.A., we have a strict “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy about Significant Others in the military. So, while such “requests” are indeed probably very compelling, we’re not allowed to talk about them.
To Mods: Guidelines for having a thread closed if you are the OP
Do: E-mail a mod and ask nicely if they can close the thread in question.
Don’t: Start a snooty thread and then act like a spoiled, petulant child when the mods are less than effusive with their responses.
I would have thought someone bold, worldly, and non-conformist could have figured this out.
Right.
Go to your room.
Oh I might be, I suppose, but I’m too busy wondering why you should feel this way, given your gleeful participation in the Duck Duck Goose thread as well as others.
Unless, of course, it’s not a pile-on when you do it. It’s just sharing your opinion.
I think a quote from 1776 (paraphrased) is in order:
Posts are only pile-ons when they are in the third person, as in “their pile-on”. Whenever postings are referred to in the first or second person they are always justified, as in “our opinions” or “my posts”.
