To Pokegen or not Pokegen: Advice

I want to start playing Pokemon White, which I just got with my shopper’s optimum points. But I feel like I have to beat the elite four in Pearl before I can allow myself to play black, y’know?

Anyhoo, my pokemon are seriously under leveled to accomplish the task: best is my gf’s level 55 dragonite, then my level 53 Palkia and 53 Empoleon. I just don’t want to level them up anymore, I’m getting tired of it; it’s been months since I played it and I’m out of touch with it.

I read about this pokegen thing, and it sounds like a neat way to just create a lv 100 beast from scratch. Does it work? How does it work? And if you’re not using ROMS, how in the heck do you get these super-pokemon to your cartridge?

Thanks!!

It can generate Action Replay codes, which you can use to alter the Flash Memory of your game. It works, and it will even generate tournament legal Pokemon if you want (in case you want a legit Pokemon). One warning is that you may want to read up on IVs and EVs and whatnot before you use it, otherwise the interface will be incomprehensible.

I also recommend against using it unless you use those pokemon for single player only. Pokemon is one of the games I have no issues cheating on unless you’re using it for multiplayer, but seriously, the single player game can get preeeeetty damn tedious.

I honestly have no idea about this stuff. But my gut reaction is just…why?

I love Pokemon and the fun of training up my little guys is the entire point of it. The main story would be pretty uninspiring as a piece of gaming were it not for the pleasure of progression with your monsters. As far as multiplayer is concerned, I don’t know how it could be at all fun to beat people who spent lots of time and effort to raise pokemon if all you did is enter a code into a cheat device.

If any of this will provide a few fleeting moments of a rewarding feeling for you then go ahead I guess, but I think maybe you should re access why you even want to play games in the first place.

Exactly this. I played pearl two years ago. I don’t wanna go wading through the woods just to level up my pokemon a bit more. I wanna beat it, do my victory lap, and open up pokemon white.

I just have to reiterate how much I don’t get it. Without the monster training aspect if the game there’s nothing fun about it, you’d just be walking around a very basic world map and pressing A for the most powerful attack you can hack. That’s like playing Tetris with a program that stacks the blocks for you.

Can you explain to me what the appeal is of playing a game without the main gameplay element?

In his case, sounds like he just wants to have the completion score and see the ending or whatever so he can move on to the next game. I’ve done that in things like Mass Effect, especially if he’s already beat it once and lost his save or something.

Bingo. And get the world pokedex (get upon completion) so I can bring in my pokemon from Red and Yellow into a unified party!

The battling and whatnot is fun, but the actual RAISING is a complete pain in the ass. There is nothing fun about spending hours on end trying to catch a ditto with a certain nature, or hatch and rehatch a Pokemon several hundred times until it has the IVs you want.

A LOT in Pokemon boils down to time sinks due to low probabilities. The battling is fun, making the team to do the battling can be a right pain if you want to actually create a good team because if you’re actually trying you’ll probably spend 28 hours doing nothing but travelling between the Pokemon Center and Mt. Moon.

Now, that’s part of the game, yes, and if you were doing multiplayer I’d say don’t do it for fairness sake (though maybe I could allow hacking one nature or something), but people play single player for all sorts of reasons, and hacking allows you a quick environment to test out ideas. If you want your all Eeveelution team you don’t have to spend five billion hours doing all the breeding and training necessary, you can just hack 6 up to the appropriate levels with Eeveelution-appropriate moves and see how well the team works. I find the battling and trying out new strategies much more fun and rewarding than the hours on end of mashing A, running back and forth to hatch eggs, and throwing endless pokeballs.

Oh, and the big one is event items/pokemon. Those are content that are part of the (admittedly lackluster) story that you can’t get unless you’re tapped into the Pokemon scene and free to be at Gamestop at whatever time with your DS for a ticket. Hacking the event items or event Pokemon since they trigger special events really isn’t a big deal.

Ok guys, have fun playing a monster raising game without raising monsters.

Snark aside, I guess I can see where you are coming from if that’s how you can best have fun with it, seeing as how fun is the entire point of games. Just remind me not to play with any of you.

Basically, I’m at the last boss (the champion after the elite four). And i’ve run out of items and I’m short on cash. If I could use a trainer for a few more revives, I’d be good to go!

In Pearl? You ran out of cash in a G4 game? I’m flabbergasted. Here’s the secret : Pachirisu. Take a couple of them around while battling wild Pokemon for XP, and their Pickup ability will load you up with items you can sell. Just remember to check to see if they’re holding anything after every 2-3 battles.

Bricker Jr asks me to add:

Get the amulet coin. Hand it to your lead Pokemon. Go outside the Pokemon Mansion (north area of Route 212). Find Gentleman Jeremy and Socialite Reina. Battle them. Jeremy gives 10,000 poke dollars when he loses. Reina gives 8,000 when she loses. The amulet coin doubles these amounts to 20,000 and 16,000. Walk 256 steps to recharge the Vs. Seeker. Return and battle them again.

Repeat this process until you have enough money to buy whatever you need.

Bricker Jr also opines that your problem is bad movesets on Dragonite, Palkia, and Empoleon. He says that for one example, you should not face Garchomp with either Dragonite or Palkia. Empoleon resists dragon attacks due to his steel typing and can learn ice beam, which should knock out Garchomp in one hit.
