to settle a bet (UV Rays through glass column)

Going back to the article aboout U V rays penetrating car glass, our desert driving, southern friend with the ’ real ’ tan says that the New Yorker’s quote " insist that absolutely no U V rays can pass through the plain clear glass of a car window ", something that Cecil refutes in the " endeavor to learn ".
Then our southern friend attributes them as saying that " sunlamps either don’t give off U V rays or the bulb is not glass ". We are however informed by Cecil that sun lamps do give off U V rays through a bulb made of ‘special’ glass.
I think that Alice won the bet and deserves her free lunch.

Welcome to the Straight Dope Message Boards, Sonofagun, we’re glad to have you with us.

When you start a thread, it’s helpful to other readers if you provide a link to the column in question. Yes, it’s on the front page today, but it will soon vanish into the Archives. So, to save people searching time and to keep us all on the same page, a link is appreciated. In this case, I presume you mean: Can you tan through glass? - The Straight Dope

No biggie, you’ll know for next time.

And, by the way, that was a “classic” from 1983, so if Alice hasn’t collected by now, I think it’s pretty much antiquated.

Again, welcome!

I came here to say the same thing. That Cecil guy was being awfully dickish, considering Alice was mostly right.
