Democrats are notoriously not-lockstepped. This is one of the main reasons why Rove thought he could forge a permenant Republican majority. The moderate Republican voter didn’t just disappear. S/He’s still out there disagreeing with people like me who think that civil liberties include being able to fuck for money if you want and inject bleach if that pleases you. And they’re just disgusted with what the Republican party has become: anti-intellectual, divisive, greedy, party-before-country nay-sayers.
The following is all my worthless opinion but the Republicans have a few choices now: Continue on the Rush Route and hope that there are enough True Americans as defined by Sarah Palin to keep them relevant; moderate themselves and welcome back the Wills and Buckleys of conservative thought or just fade away.
If the Democrats get so full of themselves that they think they can have a permenant majority, stomp on the constitution and secretly break the law left and right, then they will get theirs too.
A higher degree in Large Economy Repair might be more relevant at present.

Seriously, though- lawyers (which is what happens to most political science students- law school) are grossly overrepresented in legislatures. I ranted about it in a previous thread but I can’t find the post now.
