To those who wish to expatriate to Canada, I pit you, cowards.

The coming face of northern North America.

New Canadian national anthem:

Hey, if I moved to Canada I’d still vote absentee every election. I won’t give up completely on America.

I thought it was kind of funny too.

However, I can totally appreciate that if the political climate here started to shift, drastically towards the US system, I would be looking for somewhere to move as well.

I don’t think it’s cowardly, I think it makes sense to try to go where you belong and fit in. Having a constant struggle in your life makes it rather difficult to get anything done. I imagine that this is why may gays move to San Francisco or Montreal - they can find a bigger group of people with whom they share some common ground.

Anyhow - as far as I’m concerned, as long as you’ll wear a toque and drink some Tim Horton’s, yer welcome here.

You know, I really don’t give a shit about America. Never have. It’s just the place my parents happened to be nine months after they fucked. The only thing keeping me here is the fact that all my friends and family live here, too. Plus, its where I keep all my stuff.

I don’t believe in patriotism. I don’t believe in allegiance to nation-states. I think that sort of tribalism is one of the most destructive forces in human history, and the sooner we move beyond it, the better we’ll all be as a species.

Look, I was born in San Rafael, California. I don’t live in San Rafael now, because I found a nicer place to live in Corte Madera. Does that make me a traitor? If I decide to move from California to Utah, because I like Utah better, does that make me a traitor? So if I decide to move to Canada, or New Zealand, or England, why is that so much different from any other move I could make within the country?

Canada’s too freakin’ cold. I’ve got a better plan, see: I figure I’ll wait about five years. That’ll be about when the Billaries decide it’s time for them to make a signature statement for their third term in office, so they’ll kick Cuba’s ass.

Then I’ll stake me out a place somewhere around Pinar Del Rio.

The USA has been moving to the right for the last few decades. Being so close to the USA, we get a lot of cultural contamination. Political refugees from the USA would help us bolster ourselves. So come on up, folks.

Damn right.

And i don’t know what the OP’s complaining about. Firstly, as others have pointed out, there is little likelihood of any substantial emigration. And, even if there were, isn’t this exactly what all the “America: love it or leave it” conservatives have been hoping for all along?

I’m just guessing, but I think Chao is a liberal. He’s just afraid of being the last one left here.

I long for the day when Democrats rise back to power. Then I can use these phrases against conservatives whenever they criticize the government.

Don’t like socialized healthcare? You can love it or get the hell out!!

You’re all welcome to come on up anytime. We’ve got plenty of room. No really. Have you seen the place? It’s huge.

A few misconceptions should be cleared up though.

  1. The Weather. As those of you who live in the northeastern states or along the 49th below Alberta and Saskatchewan know, Canada does not have a monopoly on cold weather. British Columbia is quite temperate. (Think Washington state).

  2. Homersexual marriage. We’re all for it. For some reason our politicians seem to think that if two people love each other, they can just go ahead and get married if they want. So far, it doesn’t appear to have made much of an impact on the rest of us, in that hundreds of hetero marriages haven’t fallen apart. Amazing, innit?

  3. Legalized pot. NOT TRUE. For a brief period of time, it was legal due to a court decision, but that has since been amended and it is now illegal again. But, our police force is much less draconian in their attitude towards it. A buddy of mine got caught with a joint, and he got a $55 (US$7.43) fine. We have a War on Drugs, I suppose, but marijuana is seen as relatively harmless. Unless you plan on operating a grow house. A bill has been introduced to decriminalize, but it’s a horrible piece of legislation (I’m pro-dope, btw), and I hope it fails.

  4. Health care. It ain’t free, but it’s a damn sight better than what you have down there.

This public service announcement is in no way meant to be taken as anti-American.

We’ve been working on moving up there. It isn’t as easy as one might think. We need to complete the proper paperwork, secure work, find a place to live while at the same time wrap up everything down here. But we should be there by this time next year (in fact, just under 7 months). This also isn’t a move to another city, this is leaving a country for another. I have no intention to return except to perhaps visit family.

And why am I getting everything in place to move to BC? From what I can tell Canada is the only country left in North America where one can live the American dream.

In any case, I’m more then happy to provide my paypal account for donations. I’ll even let you Americanos drive my things to the border. That would help alot.

From your screenname, can I assume that you’re familiar with Robert Anton Wilson? (just a shot in the dark, feel free to correct me chao)

Now, most folks have torn you to lil’ bits, I just wanted to chime in and add my 2.3 cents.

You’re right, Americans fleeing the rise of religious lunacy and anti-intellectualism shouldn’t flee to Canada.

I’ve heard great stuff about New Zealand.

You just don’t get it, Chao. We’ve got a president who’s fucked up everything this country is supposed to stand for, and a bunch of brain-dead hicks just voted him back in. People are disgusted - not just that the president is a fuckwad, but at the fact that half the country supports the fuckwad. It’s not about overcoming obstacles; it’s about realizing that the majority no longer cares to overcome those obstacles. This country has become myopic, and the majority of us don’t seem to realize it. We’re turning into a nation of self-important “me first - screw you” individuals. It’s getting downright embarassing to be an American these days. So while I’m not going anywhere, I can certainly understand the sentiment.

You know, I think I want to put my move in another way.

I’ve always paid my taxes without complaint. I’ve been an active member of society my entire adult life. I’ve managed to hold a job, own my own business, and make a living and never pull anything from the state except for a short stint on unemployment years ago. I’ve always voted. I donate to various causes. etc, etc. I’ve not been to jail. I don’t rob, steal, or even speed in my car. I contribute to my country and ask for little in return.

I’ve heard the “love it or leave it” many times before. The OP telling me " Good riddance, and to you all, a hearty and robust FUCK YOU!." just secures one of my reasons to move.

I like to think of it like having a roomate. This roomate complains about paying rent and tries to come up with ways to avoid paying it. He doesn’t want to help keep the yard clean or feed the pets. He doesn’t want to take the time to be a member of the local community and spends a good deal of time pissing off the neighbours. He preaches his “christian” values while his actions are anything but. Guess what? I don’t want to keep living in a house like that. I’d rather let the roomate take over the house and do whatever he wants while I leave that disfunctional dwelling in search for other like-minded roomates.

Anyway, I’m sure this is all on deaf ears, but the offer to send you my paypal account still stands if you’d like to put your money where your mouth is. My wife is doing the paperwork for her BC medical license and if you want to cover the expense that would be dandy. The sooner that goes through the sooner I’ll be out of your hair.

(Bolding Mine)

But…but…I don’t want to marry a Homer. :frowning:

Welcome to Canada, Seven. I hope you and your wife have wonderful lives here in your soon to be new homeland.

Dude, stay up to date-- current exchange is 80 cents.

I firmly believe this is because I’m temporarily out of the country and living in the US, so my presence is degrading the American economy

Vancouver Island secedes? It’s grey on that map.

(Otherwise, very funny. Better than the “Jesusland” one.)

Hell, I moved 200 km from Ottawa to Montreal so that I could be gay and out in a more enlightened city. Mind you, this was 1992, and a lot of things in the RoC have changed since then, but I still find being gay is a virtual non-issue here. Witness the total lack of resistance or surly salesclerks or leery business managers every step of the way as we’ve planned our wedding. In fact, we’ve experienced downright enthusiasm more often than not. It’s been very heartening.

Still, I wonder if it would be this easy in Ottawa or Toronto without sticking only to gay-friendly businesses. We’ve done all of our business exactly where we’ve chosen to, including the oldest Canadian retail chain (The Hudson’s Bay Company), and Birks, the venerable jewelry institution. Not one nasty look.

We are too. That’s why The Simpsons is in its 16th season.

In the end, no more than a scintilla of a fraction of an unbelievably minute percentage of Americans will even seriously attempt to emigrate to Canada (or anywhere else), and most of those will change their minds once the realities of being a romantic expatriate set in.

Bitching and moaning here at home will be the norm.

I’m not going anywhere. I plan to stay put right here in the US. But, you can take your “love it or leave it attitude” and drop it. I’ts not treason to disapprove of how things are going. It’s not snivelling to say so either. I don’t like the “get out” view, and I don’t like the “we won so shut up” view either. So much for "compassionate conservatism and “inclusion” eh? Plenty of us have family who came here from somewhere else, who did fight in our wars, because they believed there was something worth fighting for. Ever hear of World War II? My father and all my uncles were there. Now how does keeping quiet about the current war honor anyone? If I think their lives are being wasted because of one man’s mistake/arrogance/incompetence, don’t I have a duty to say so? Which is more dishonorable - to speak up or to keep quiet?
Sure we have a big problem with terrorists. I don’t see aything useful being done about it, and now it has been said that the big one, Bin Laden is unimportant now. If that is so, then what the hell are we doing? Why did we “appoint” his friends the warlords to bring him in? Maybe the administration did not want him found. With no bogeyman, the whole “terror” platform falls apart.
So on the one hand, it’s “love it or leave it” and on the other hand it’s “fuck the ones who choose to leave”.
