To those who wish to expatriate to Canada, I pit you, cowards.

You are a Canadian spy, and I claim my £5.

By the way chao, I for one am staying, at least for now.

But I sure am sick and tired of feeling that I have to be embarrased every time I tell someone from another country that I’m an american, or that I have to add that, no, I didn’t vote for him.

Is it really too much to want to be in a country that’s respected, or at least not loathed by most of the world?

Maybe we should start a pool on when we’ll see parity.

I’m not joking. I’m thinking maybe by the 2006 midterms.

Flop

I am confused…do you or don’t want to move? Let me guess you would want the money but not have to move…sounds like a solicits…

We’re already at parity. Well, above parity, now, since the Cdn$ closed higher still on Friday.

You should check your cites. It is SteveG who is not moving anywhere, not Seven.

Gorsnak, I believe that’s purchasing-power parity*. In numerical terms, the Canadian dollar is somewhere around 83c US.

83.5???
It’s rising faster than gas prices!

We’ve talked about it for several different reasons. And although we don’t have the points to emigrate just yet, we may be able to do so in a couple of years. Will we do it? Perhaps.

Most of the reasons have nothing whatsoever to do with the US. We love Canada. We’ve both visited many times and we both simply feel at home there. We love the scenery, we love the people, and we love the atmosphere. We both feel we should have been Canadians from birth.

We both want to raise children in a positive environment. I am very, very skeptical about raising kids here. We’re in one of the states that just voted the ban on gay marriage. We’re in a wealthy community as lower-middle class people, so we don’t fit in that way. We have no intention of getting older and buying one of the McMansions in the town, which seems to be the intention of many here. There is absolutely no diversity here. The schools here are about 98% white. My husband went to high school with 2 minority kids out of 290. The other 288 were white. I went to school where 1/3 were black, 1/3 were Asian and Latino, and 1/3 were white. I can’t imagine sending my kids to a school that’s got no diversity whatsoever. And it’s not even the lack of diversity, it’s the attitudes toward minorities.

Like **Elysian, we just don’t fit in. We believe in gay marriage, freedom to worship the god of your choice (and we do NOT believe that the US is, or should be, a Christian country, like I’ve heard from so many people). The actions of our country in the past several years are painful to us. Not only do we not want to raise our children in an environment of hatred and bigotry, we don’t especially want to live in one.

What’s keeping us here is the money and our family. We don’t have the money to move to another country. We would miss our family very much. But should we have the money to move, we may seriously look into it.

Canada is the country that we feel the US should be. I do hope one day that the US is as ‘nice’ as Canada. And I hope it’s in my lifetime.

Cite?? I’m the one who is staying put. Get your quotes right. I don’t have a problem with anyone leaving, it’s their choice. Likewise I have no problem with anyone staying. So again, what’s it gonna be? “Love it or leave it”, or “drop dead for leaving”? Pick one. I would think those of you who have yelled “Love it or leave” it since the '60s would be ecstatic if there was a huge exodus. You’re all getting your wish. Maybe the same people who heard it back then don’t care to hang around any longer waiting for the rest of the country to straighten out and find some middle ground. I can’t blame them really. Patiently waiting and hoping gets real old after almost half a century.

This doesn’t make sense. The OP could have made a case for “cowardice” if these people wanted to leave out of fear (say, after the 9/11), but political dissent isn’t cowardice.

It takes more resolve to leave one’s country than to stay.

Of course, the OP might want to make a case for white americans being the descendants of cowards, since their ancestors left their countries of origin to settle in America.

Yes, of course that’s purchasing power parity. It’s the only interesting kind. Numerical parity is an arbitrary sort of thing, more psychological than anything.

I was thinking about emigrating north, but it looks like Bush is being more reasonable since his latest victory. Why, my family received a letter just yesterday letting us know that we have up to six months to choose a place of worship. Of course, our choice has to be based on the list of sanctioned faiths, but I wasn’t really tied to that whole Buddhism thing anyway.

Ohhhhh, suck it Dems!!! Previously posted here ! Ignorant A-holes! =D

BA

I can’t speak for Ottawa, but everyone we dealt with in Toronto was amazingly supportive when hubby and I were setting up our wedding last January/February …

Well, OK, The Bay at Yonge and Bloor wasn’t too great, but I don’t think I’ve EVER seen them help any customers - Gay or Straight

You know it is Saturday night, for Blackacre is posting while drunk again.

Actually, we have no way of knowing what day or time it is, because while he might sometimes post drunk, he apparently always posts stupid.

???

Flip-flop eh?? (I’m working on my accent you see)

I love how the good ol’ U S of A has become a place where it is wrong to change your mind,. even if you haven’t.

If you’re going insert my name in something someone else said just to prove your point or come after me you might as well make it good. Like, let’s see…

Or how about

Give me a break.

I’m sorry. We pray to the Dark Mistress, not the Dark Lord. I’m afraid you’re just out of luck.

What?? No dark lord? Well, as long as there is plenty of puppy killing, then I’m still in

We don’t kill puppies here; we celebrate them, in a disgustingly-sentimental James Lumbers hang-on-the-wall kind of way. Of course, the saccharine levels this generates often kills them anyways, but sacrifice is good in a good cause (like “socialised medicine” or trying to figure out how to spend the federal surplus), and anyways, you can’t make a Timbit withoug putting holes in a few Tims, eh?
