To what extent are you following the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil? A Poll for the SDMB.
As for me, I’m watching as many matches as I can, as usual. I’ve only missed a handful…And it’s been a blast!

Is there a poll?
Not at all. I used to watch when I was in Japan, because the Japanese are to into it, but since moving to Taiwan I don’t follow it any more.
Except for the US matches, I’m watching them when nothing else is on TV. They are more entertaining to watch (or is that ignore?) than baseball, and the lack of commercials is very welcome. It helps that my kids played soccer so I know the game relatively well, otherwise it may be really boring to this American
Poll is up.
Don’t even care. I find soccer slightly less interesting than watching grass grow, paint dry, or politicians talk (or baseball), so I’m not watching any of it on purpose.
Does it count if Google is my home page, and every day I check out the Google Doodle to try to figure out who is playing?
I listen to radio news sports headlines, so I’m somewhat foggily cognizant of the top of the standings lists.
I really only know what I see on Google or Facebook or if I overhear other people talking about it. I’m just not interested in the sport.
I follow/watch as many matches as I can via live broadcast, but not all.
Hey, I’m in Malaysia this month…so games are at midnight, 3 AM, or 6 AM!
I know how Costa Rica’s doing because my entire family won’t shut the hell up about it. So I know what I need to know without having to watch any of the games, which I find boring as hell. That’s right, a SDMB member who doesn’t like sports. :faints:
I don’t really care about the actual playing of sports, but I sort of like the excitement and pageantry of big events. So I’ve been keeping up with the US team. But that’s about it.
I’ve seen at least a half of virtually every match; the only ones I didn’t catch any of were a few of the 3pm Eastern starts in the group stage between teams I didn’t particularly care about. Normal day the last few weeks has involved taking lunch for the second half of the noon game(s), putting any interesting 3pm games on my phone at my desk at work, watching the second half of any 4pm games after I get home from work, and straight up watching all the blessed 6pm starts. Plus grilling and WC tilts on the weekends, of course.
Needless to say, I’m going in a bit early tomorrow and leaving at 3:30 so I have time to get home and walk to my neighborhood bar for the US game.
I don’t pretend to be a soccer super-fan, though: I love the sport, but the convenient time zone is a huge part of watching so much. If the games were at 4am, I’d be DVR’ing the US games and a few other key ones, and ignoring most of the rest of the tournament.
My wife is going to be thrilled when the World Cup is over.
I haven’t watched any games but I have followed the outcomes.
I think it’s awesome, I’ve been watching as many matches as I can. I’ve seen 2 out of 3 US matches so far.
Once July 13 comes and goes I’ll forget all about soccer until 2018.
I’m watching as many matches as I can, but mostly recorded (gotta work - boooooo).
Did watch a couple of games live while I was in Mexico for a few days, including the Mexico-Netherlands game, which was amazing (and sad).
Same here, although I’m not even following the outcomes that closely.
Not even remotely interested and don’t care who wins what.
I think I’ve seen almost every match except for Iran-Nigeria, which I didn’t bother with. But I work in K-12 and am on summer break, so I have the time.
Of all the herd sports, soccer is the best IMO.
I always watch DVR recorded so I can skip commercials. Same with the soccer games. Even if the outcome is already known, I watch anyway. Some of the early games I still need to watch because there are / were so many of them.
I worked my way up to a State One Level as a referee and I am always interested in what they do & really enjoy the lack of knowledge of the laws of the game that most announcers & ex-players who provide color comments show. I also love to grade the quality of dives, faking injuries and general all around cheating that is praised by the media & announcers.
Love that they won’t show the asshats that come from the stands & try to disrupt the games. No see, no names, no coverage = nothing for the effort but being barred from getting in anymore at that stadium for this years games.
My kids played, my son got to try out for the Olympic team, did not make it, both got a 2 week tour of England with games against the English kids & others in a couple of tournaments that were on going. I got to referee some of the older kids games. They Are better than most college teams from the US.
I tried to play but was never that good. I was over 40 when I first got the kids interested. Kinda late for me to be a player or a referee as far as advancement went as there are age limits for different levels of referee in the higher levels.
Soccer rocks. It is very hard to be that good which you find out quick when you try.
YMMV
I have no interest in Soccer, I find the game to be utterly boring.
I caught the last 10 minutes of Australia’s first game only because I happened to be reading news online at breakfast and noticed the game was on TV at that time. Thought I should at least see how we were going. Other than that I haven’t watched any of it. Meh. Tip of a sport IMHO
