To what extent are you following the World Cup?

I’m a special snowflake I guess. I’m following the tournament very closely … checking all the scores and following the bracket. I haven’t watched any games though, because … well, it’s soccer. I like the the idea of it, but the sport is unwatchable.

I’m riveted … as I am every four years. My DVR space is strained, I’ve taken days off to make sure I’m present for the USA games, I’m planning on blowing off several BBQ’s tomorrow so I can watch France-Germany and Brazil-Colombia, I have a poster of the tournament grid on my man-cave wall where I’m meticulously recording all the results, I can’t wait for the championship match.

Now that the US is out (fucking Wondolowski!) I’ll be rooting for Argentina, because I like Messi and I think Argentina beating Brazil for the championship would be the finest sort of entertainment since the Watts riots.

So, I chose option two.

I guess all the folks that like World Cup soccer like me & Jack & a few others who have posted are all watching it and not bothering to make all the snarky comments in response to the snark crowd. Or maybe they are just a bit higher class???

To bad the poll is so slanted & there is no choice for us that really like the sport even if our favorite lost out in this contest.

Makes me sorry I don’t hammer the threads on basketball, golf, college sports with non stop negativity. Hummm, may start that as a way to pad post count… I’m sure there will be little criticism for that.
Had to go with ‘special snowflake.’ Bawahahaha

Slanted? … o.O

You know as the OP I made it clear I’ve been watching almost every game? But if you’re complaining that it’s slanted against those who like the game … uh, what?

Huh? “I’ve watched almost every match via live broadcast, and plan to watch through the final match” and “I follow/watch as many matches as I can via live broadcast, but not all” and “I follow/watch matches for my home country and/or a few others” don’t work for you at all? What poll are you looking at?

Whatever.

Where is the option for someone who follows every game via DVR? I watch nothing live, always DVR so I can fast FWD through the commercials or the few stupid ex-players that do not know even the barest laws of the game. There are a lot of good ones but there are a few…

IMO, you had many more options for negativity & people who do not like soccer.

IMO, most polls on the SDMB are very slanted in general & that opinion may have carried over to being extra critical of yours.

Peace

Glad you like the game too.

I did realize soon after the poll was up I should have left the words “via live broadcast” off of “I follow/watch as many matches as I can [del]via live broadcast[/del], but not all.”

Meh, it’s not a scientific poll.

I’m actually quite heartened this time around that there seems to be less, “it’s a sport for little girls,” bullshit floating around. Go back to threads at four year intervals and look at any thread even mentioning soccer and they are rife with ignorants telling us how pussy we all are for being fans of the most popular sport in the world.

I was all geared up for the usual suspect of arguments (it’s a kids game, adults are bored by it, they wear stupid shorts, all the do is pass it back and forth, ties suck, etc, etc, etc) … but thankfully, I haven’t had to unleash my wrath.

Or maybe I’m just getting soft in my old age.

I think significantly more American people have come to respect soccer, if not quite love it, yet. The MLS is doing great overall, TV ratings for the World Cup are through the roof, watching the Premier League in America is now an actual thing, etc. (Go Arsenal!)

I’m not claiming soccer will surpass “America’s Pastime.” But it’s certainly mainstream enough that we’re seeing less thread shitting. Not none, but less. Outside of the “Brasil 2014” thread, I mostly just ignore it.

What’s wrong with the shorts?

Somewhere between option 3 and 4. I DVR matches and watch many of them, but some I skip and for a few I will occasionally ( whisper it ) fast-forward through a bit if the play seems to be gummed up in the middle for sizeable stretches.

So obviously I’m not really a big fan normally and pretty much only pay attention to soccer during the World Cup. Otherwise I probably see one or two FC Barcelona matches a year on TV because I have a friend who is a fan.

It’s entertaining, but I’m pretty catch-as-catch-can with all sports these days, except for the big stages. I do read the sports page everyday in my paper, like the old dinosaur I am ;).

Don’t ask me. I have several pairs myself, and I don’t even play professionally.

Is it because American football players wear tight, buttock-flattering pants?

Special snowflake calling…

In an ideal world I’d watch every single second of every single match live (obviously not possible these days after Germany and Austria ruined football in 1982).

I’ve missed the majority of the games because I’m overseeing an office refurbishment that clashes with most of the matches.

Filthy Lucre 1, Football 0.

Exactly. I’ve watched a single world cup soccer game in my entire life, and you know, that’s enough.

By the way, even a game I have no interest in, I am thoroughly captivated the commentary by the British broadcasters, a quadrennial event that I look forward to. Play by play announcing by intelligent, articulate, educated people forming compete English sentences, using multi-syllabic words instead of the dumbed-down foklsy jocktalk of typical American play by play announcers.

Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Netherlands make it to the semifinals. Wow – who sat that coming? Maybe next time, they should increase the field to 48 or 64, give more teams a chance for certain elimination…

Most criticisms of soccer can be shown to be nonsensical in the same way that every theory about the fall of the Western Roman Empire also has to take into account the fact that the Eastern half didn’t fall. Just replace “Western Roman Empire” with “the U.S.” and “Eastern Roman Empire” with “the rest of the world”.

it’s a kids game: In the rest of the world it isn’t.
**
adults are bored by it**: In the rest of the world they aren’t.

they wear stupid shorts: In the rest of the world those shorts aren’t stupid.

all the do is pass it back and forth: There might be something to this one, although in the rest of the world they score goals, tackle and to other things as well (not sure how you do things in the MLS).
**
ties suck**: In the rest of the world they don’t suck.
