July 12, 1979: The infamous Disco Demolition Night promotion was held in Chicago’s Comisky Park during a double header between the Chicago White Sox and the Detroit Tigers. The resulting explosion, fan riot, flying records, gate-crashers and overall mayhem lead to the forfeit of the second game by the Chicago White Sox, as well as to commentator charges of racism, homophobia and the overall hastening of the end of the disco music scene in the US. No American League game has been forfeited since.

**July 13, 1977 **: Lightning strikes lead to a 25-hour power outage for most of New York City. This outage occurred during an oppressive heat wave. Looting and vandalism were widespread, leading to over 4000 arrests.
