Today's B.C. "comic"

  1. I didn’t get it, but I think it’s funny now I do, (for a pun).

  2. I’d have described it as a joke slightly at O’Reilly’s expense.

  3. But accept that it could be that in the wider context of BC, it would be seen as an endorsement.

  4. Some of the best political commentary is satire is in cartoons. Of course, you have to think, not just accept what you read, but doesn’t that always apply?

The entire premise of the strip is to skewer present-day foibles by depicting cavepersons in an anachronistic way.

And matt, just for asking that, I’m tempted to send you my copy of Jesus in Genesis (I have to find some way to get the thing out of my house! ;))

I aggree ith rexdart , I dont see any christianity in this,

CLAMS GOT LEGS!!!

I also remember being a fan of BC in earlier years. “Fan” is surely too strong a word, but his stuff was ok. I dont remember exactly when I first noticed his witnessing, but figure, hey, whats the hurt. After I saw Zonker telling the fable about the man who was kind to animals and was rewarded with his weight in primo hashish, I kinda figured all bets were off.

But, a moment for Pogo. How we miss you.

I read this strip exactly as mhendo did.

This particular B.C. strip seems to be an interesting Rorsach test for personal political leanings.

Hart’s finest moment, right there.

Sorry, the hamsters were so slow that my computer timed out and I thought my post hadn’t posted; but apparently after about half a dozen others did, it trickled onto the thread. I’m not THAT slow. Really.

BC isn’t funny any more even if you DO agree with the politics. Which I don’t.

For those unfamiliar with Hart’s latter year God dropping penchant, two God mentions in the last 30 days(last one snuck under the wire):

And what the heck is this about? Was there some holiday I’m unaware of?(my search turns up “Armed Forces Day”):

I guess some think the OP comic is an endorsement d/t the fact that since the beanie is indeed not spinning it implies O’Reilly is also truly not spinning. I am ambivalent.

Nowadays the comic page is 90% skipped for me anyway. How do these guys stay on these gravy trains, recycled lame ass jokes reprinted in hundreds of papers. Blecch.

Actually just realized that that last link also has “God bless America” in it so I guess that’s really 3 mentions in 30 days. Maybe it’s his form of tithing.

Comes now to the BBQ Pit a poor example of the visual humors. It depicts a propellor beanie the propellor of which will not spin. Upon inspection, the beanie bears the words “The O’Reilly Factor”.

[li]Statement 1: Johnny Hart has a definite Christian slant in his comics. He ain’t Jack Chick, but it’s there.[/li][li]Statement 2: Johnny Hart frequently uses substandard jokes in his comics, including bad puns and poor visual humor.[/li][/ul]

Both statements are generally accepted by The Dopers.

Now The Dopers apply Hanlon’s Razor, to wit: “Never ascribe to malice what can be adequately explained by stupidity.” While malice is not at issue here, Hanlon’s Razor applies to the extent that it is more likely to be Hart’s lack of talent than any bias that caused the strip in question.

Therefore, it is the opinion of this Doper that the strip is simply a bad pun. I doubt it reflects any political bias whatsoever.

(Anyone want to dissent? ;))

I’ll choose B, Alex…

 Zonker is a Doonesbury character.

Elucidator was making the point that Doonesbury is already so political that it would be churlish for us lefties to complain too much about BC endorsing Bill O’Reilly.

Okay then.

I’m a huge fan of Non Sequitur, and while I’ll agree that it takes some pretty vicious swipes I can’t recall any that were less that accurate and deserved, and usually very funny as well. I’m one of “them” people who clip fav toons to go on the fridge, and the “Darwin Genelogical Preserve” strip has been up there for years and can still make me grin.

Rigel

Really, dudes, if it has taken anyone this long to give up on BC…

Sign me in with those who think it’s a lame-o-rrific attempt at pun humour.

I’m sort of surprised that this thread has gone on for so long with only a passing reference to Doonesbury. It seems to me from some of the comments here that if a cartoonist is in line with your political view, he or she is just fine. If they aren’t, then they should be drawn and quartered. I didn’t find the BC comic in question funny…I found it kind of lame. Hart has been phoning it in lately. As for Trudeau and Doonesbury…I ignore that comic now. I had to start doing that after my eyes began cramping up from all that involuntary rolling they were doing when exposed to Trudeau’s leftist drivel.

At least Doonesbury is funny.

I didn’t know BC was still going.

I haven’t read the comics actively in 10 years.

I haven’t cared since Bloomsbury went bye bye.

Tell me, is Dondie still staring out with those big scary eyes into the unknown?

Is Brenda Starr still looking for Basil, the mysterious dark haired stranger with the eye patch?

Is Prince Valiant every going to be done in a book format to make it more interesting?
