In looking at the clothing styles of today, nothing (at least for men) has changed much in over 100 years.
What would it take to revive fashions from a remote historical era? like, say, the 1500s?
Would a designer like Ralph Lauren be willing to introduce a line that copies the styles of a long gone era?
And, have such historical styles ever been revived, in past history? I’m not talking toga parties-but actual styles worn during the day.
You gotta start it, dude!
I hate, hate, HATE the too-small suit jackets that are in style now. Looks like you got a nice suit, then washed in hot water and put it in the dryer and shrunk it.
Peasant blouses and things like that are about the only things that comes to mind.
I think we’ve slowly but surely reached some global fashion basics that have proven to work for a lot of people in a lot of different situations. I think that’s why fashion has been more or less frozen for the past 30 years. I don’t see this situation changing anytime soon.
Clothes are essentially just variations on a tube (or a wrapped rectangle); there’s only so much you can do with them. In menswear, the suit - shirt, tie, jacket, trousers - goes back to the mid-17th century.
Agree-but designers of the 1700s were much more imaginative-take a look at the styles common in the time of king Louis XIV, for example.
Women are more adaptable to new styles.
Men are so constricted, it’s not funny. Any tiny thing - a wide stripe on a dress shirt, a dress shirt in a COLOR - any little variation on a belt or shoes - sends them into an anguished tizzy.
Look at the FB sites full of ‘retro’ fashions for men, the polyester suits and shirts, the high waisted tight pants - people are rolling on the floor laughing. That was the last time men had any choice to break out of their boring same old same old, they will never go back.
