Today's (Sunday's) B.C. comic....offensive?

Sorry if this is the wrong board for this post…not really sure where to put it.

My local newspaper is discontinuing the B.C. comic strip because several local religious leaders, as well as the executive editor of the paper, consider today’s strip to be extremely offensive and insensitive. They are claiming that the intent of the strip was to convey that with the death of Jesus, and the birth of Chrisianity, Judaism has been died. Supposedly the comic is saying Judaism is superseded and obsolete, that it has been snuffed out.

In addition, Johnny Hart (the author of B.C.) released a statement saying that his intent was to pay tribute to both Christianity AND Judaism, and that he is sorry if the strip has offended any readers.

It is obvious to me that Johnny Hart had no intention of conveying the message that Christianity supersedes Judaism, that a few public officials here decided to be offended by the strip without even considering Hart’s intent, and that they declared the comic was offensive and insensitive without attempting to find out how many people actually WERE offended by the strip…in perfect political-correctness style.

Getting such a meaning out of this comic strip is extremely far-fetched to me. But I am neither Christian nor Jewish, so I have no basis with which to determine the strip’s insensitivity.

TO CHRISTIANS AND JEWS: Did you find this strip offensive? Did you get the same message from it that the clegy here did? I would really like to hear your views.

I am saddened that the newspaper felt the need to do away with impartiality and objectivity, in favor of the views of a few public leaders who obviously got the wrong idea. I thought this city had the ultimate in open-mindedness, and that political correctness was gone. Guess not.

Tha would be Great Debates. There is a long thread on this very topic there.

Heres’ a link to the comic.

Here is the Great Debates thread:
Is this an anti-semetic cartoon or not?

Since this topic is already being discussed in depth in another forum, I’m closing this thread.
