Tolkien Fan Entmoot

sighs with nostalgic delight

feels is in glory days of pre-FOTR

I found it amazingly “heart-swelling”, myself.

So we completed the Epic 12 hours of movie last night. My kids really enjoyed it. I enjoyed it much more this time.
I thought I would toss a link to something that just came up in the new Game Forum: D & D on the Straight Dope setup thread. Taking place in year 63 of the Fourth Age.

This should be challenging and slow paced.

Jim

I enjoyed the full rich feeling of Tolien’s Middle Earth. I have read the Silmarillion completely once. I haven’t memorized it, though.

I enjoy reading the discussions of the various Tolkien topics on this board, but I ain’t knowledegable enough to contribute anything, so I don’t try.

A tall man entered, grey-eyed and proud. He was clad as a postal worker with a coat and jacket of dark blue; on the front of his cap was writ in silver thread the legend “Speedy Delivery.” In his hand he bore a single arrow, black-feathered and barbed with steel, but the point was painted red.

He sank on one knee and presented the arrow to Tolkien. ‘Hail, friend of glee!’ he said. ‘McFeely I am, errand-rider of Rogers, who bring you this token. The Neighborhood is in great need. Often Middle-Earth has aided us; but now the Lord glee* asks for all your strength and all your speed, lest the Kingdom of Make-Believe fall at last.’

‘The Red Arrow!’ said Tolkien, holding it, as one who recieves a summons long expected and yet dreadful when it comes. His hand trembled. ‘The Red Arrow has not been seen in all my years! Has it indeed come to that? And what does the Lord glee reckon that all my strength and all my speed may be?’

‘That is best known to yourself, lord,’ said McFeely. ‘Lord glee bids me say only, “Meow meow all your strength, meow meow very fast meow.”’
*Obviously this took place before Tarion son of Tarkalion reclaimed the throne and was crowned Friday XIII.

I should have posted here earlier. I should stay out of GD for a while anyway and I’d have known about this thread.

Thank you for the inclusion Jim. I was hoping to make another visit to Milwaukee to see the Tolkien originals - I have the info for the gentleman who is stewarding the papers and manuscripts. Provided to me by one of the fine folks on your list. I do believe it would make a wonderful Tolkien Dopefest in Milwaukee if a few of us dedicated diehards could meet up there, put on the cotton gloves and try not to drool over the original manuscripts. I’m definitley doing it at some point.

Sign me up! If it’s just you and me, we could always make it a Tolkien Milwaukee ODAAT dopefest!

I’m here! Had to be a little too hasty, but it couldn’t be helped.

Stats: Silmarillion is my favorite book. Love LOTR and, to a (sligtly) lesser extet, The Hobbit. I’ve got all the HOMES, LT, UT, etc. but haven’t gotten around to reading them yet. I know, I know, a sure sign that Sauron’s forces are on the rise again.

Can I be moderately pedantic and nitpicky and note that FA means First Age? What you want is FO, adopted to avoid that ambiguity.

Moderately?

:stuck_out_tongue:

Now I won’t be able to rest easy until I know the approved designation for the Fifth Age. I’m guessing FI?

Come to think of it, Sixth Age would have the same problem, I guess. As would Seventh Age… Are we in Seventh Age yet? SI and SE? Why the hell isn’t there an Appendix for this sort of thing?

Compared to some, yes.

I swear I read somewhere that Tolkien did see this as the Seventh age. Probably in Letters.

As to the FA for Fourth Age, fine, but it is easier than FO. Who decided on FO anyway? DId I miss that moot or was I still musing on the weather question?

Moot! Moot!

I like saying moot.

That, and smock.

Did you know that JRRT only ever wrote down 6 words of Avari? His lexicon of Ilkorin is far larger than that!

<<wanders off to try to teach the local trees to talk>>

“Come on, trees! Speak up!” he barked.

I’ve been a fan since age 12. I read The Hobbit and LOTR. Repeatedly. I was thoroughly engrossed in the world Tolkien created and still find it facinating. I read The Silmarillion after FOTR was released. Repeatedly. Followed up with LOTR. Repeatedly. Seasoned with an occaisional dash of short stories and essays by JRRT.

I share a lot of the criticisms of the movies, but overall I love them. Leaving out the Scouring was, I think, the worst decision of Jackson’s, but I forgive him because the majority of the movies was so good.

Apparently we have the same taste in reading. I not only know who Qadgop is, but I know the proper reply to “Smock smock smock smock smock smock!” is:

“WHAT ON EARTH IS WRONG WITH YOU?!”

How do you feel about pTerry and the Discworld?

I just re-read “Thud” for the 5th time yesterday.

And I was disappointed when the former SDMB poster, aka “The Librarian”, didn’t know who Horace Worblehat was.

Ook.

Mellon.

You know Horace? He was in boot camp with me, what an odd coincidence.

–>I Kid<–

What the heckles is that?!

PS: Moot!
