Tolkien trivia contest

  1. Red.
  2. How many hobbits came home at the end of the War with stuff that had come from a dragon’s hoard?

(And come on, I’ve got a couple of other hobbit questions whimpering away up there.)

Mostly right - the second one should be “Were mirrored in his silver shield”

Sam is right, but I thought it was earlier than that (although not by much) - I will have to check. My memory is enhanced by the BBC Radio play version of LOTR which - although more faithful than PJ’s version - did deviate from time to time…

Grim

Red. Did I get bonus points too?

Sorry Malacandra already answered that one correctly.
We need someone to pour through the thread and determine which Questions still await answers. Any Takers?

I remembered that part this morning and came in to post it but I should have known someone else would have added to it by now and I see What Exit? posted the whole thing, too. I actually thought “Ho Tom Bombadil, Tom Bombadil-o” was in there when I posted last night but I couldn’t remember how it fit so I left it out.
A little personal trivia, my boyfriend’s initials are the same as Tom’s and his name sounds very similar so I usually say this line alot “Ho Tom Bombadil, Tom Bombadil-o” but with his name.

I believe Frodo and his crew stopped at the place where some of the spoils had been stashed on their way back home and brought some back wih them. Since Frodo is a nice guy I am sure he shared it with Sam, Merry and Pippin so with Bilbo being the first to return with dragon hoard, that would be five hobbits.

Shucks, you wrecked my question: What character appears in both LotR and Sesame Street?

The Shire-calendar was fixed from year to year, through a fudging of the days of the week. Since it so happened that by this calendar no month starts on a Friday, the expression “on Friday the first” meant “never”, roughly comparable to our “On February 30th”.

As for common names, Bombadil, Farmer Cotton, and Farmer Maggot are all named “Tom”. But I think that among Hobbits, it’s short for something other than “Thomas”.

Tolman. Farmer Cotton’s full name is Tolman Cotton.

Nyetski. You’re mixing that up with The Hobbit, where Bilbo and Gandalf stop off on the way home to pick up some of the troll’s loot that they’d hidden away. The crew weren’t collecting spoils on this trip. One item they had that had previously come from a dragon’s hoard was, of course, Frodo’s (formerly Bilbo’s) mithril shirt. The other, that they picked up on the way, was the horn that Eowyn gave to Merry. So the answer is: two hobbits.
Anyone for question 89 now?

Sorry, my request for bonus points was based on the “String or nothing” answer above.

  1. What was the name of the dragon from whose hoard that horn came?

Oh, in that case, yes take some bonus points
Just to remind people: **Mal ** you stumped me, I would have to look it up.
89) After the War, how did the Bucklanders celebrate November 2nd and why?

To 96, the only other dragon whose name I recall seeing mentioned was Ancalagon the Black, but that was long enough ago that I wouldn’t expect any of his old trinkets to still be kicking around.

It was a little Elven Humor. Those Elves were quite the sly jokers. The Dwarves never caught onto the meaning of Moria back then. They were convinced it was meant something good. (What Exit?)
A simple error in translating the ancient copy of the Red Book (What Exit?)
I have a theory about this. I believe that ‘Moria’ originally had more pleasant connotations : something like ‘shaded shelter’. However, after the Doors were Shut and Khazad-Dum was now a place of evil, the words acquired more nasty associations, until by the late 3rd age, the best translation was ‘black pit’. (Quercus)
