Tolkien trivia contest

  1. Under the eaves of Mirkwood.

  2. Aule

Some fish, and not much of anyone else. Deagol found the Ring he was wearing at the time of his death, though (that being several thousand years later, his actual remains would all have rotted away and washed away to the Sea by then).

  1. Rhosgobel.
  1. Who found Isildur’s remains? Saruman did, in his search for the One ring.
  1. Meriadoc’s real name? Kalimac Brandagamba!

  2. First ship-king. Tar-Minastur?

  3. Carc’s son: Roac

  4. First ruling queen: Tar- Miriel?

(unnumbered) What does Bagronk mean, and in what language?

If I’m recollecting correctly, this is part of the orc’s cursing of Saruman…so it’s Black Speech. No idea what it means, though.

I was lucky to remember Kalimac, you got the whole name.
On 117. Who was the first Ship King of Numenor? This was actually a bad question on my part. Technically the Ship Kings refered to Kings of Gondor not Numenor. I had **Tar-Ciryatan ** in mind, his name literally means “Ship-builder”.
He is the son of **Tar-Minastir ** who could be argued was the first “Ship King” but I think it belongs **Tar-Ciryatan ** who went to Middle-Earth as a Conquerer bringing back treasures to Númenor.

Your answer to 115 is not correct BTW. She was the last.
**Roac ** is correct.

Jim

You’ve got the language right!

I knew she was either first or last, and suspected she was the last, but I couldn’t for the life of me call up the first queen’s name.
121) What was the name of the mother of the first Lord of Andunië?
122) Who was the looked for that came at unawares, the longed for that came beyond hope?

b. Is Merry Brandybuck, as called by Elfhelm the Marshall of Rohan, as he is traveling to Minas Tirith with “Dernhelm” against Theoden’s orders.

d. Is an otherwise unnamed Uruk in Mordor, so called by the orc “Snaga”. I think.

Oh, I should ask a question.

  1. Which two members of Thorin and Co. were particularly good at starting fires with flint and tinder?

Fili and Kili, I think.

  1. Silmarien

  2. Uh, Earendil?

  3. What heirlooms did Silmarien’s father give her that were eventually handed down to Aragorn?

  4. Who was Gloin’s father and thus Gimli’s grandfather? Hint: This is another one of Tolkien’s hilarious names.

  5. What’s tengwar?

  1. Groin of course
  2. one of the two Elven alphabets.

New Question:
126. Who created the Tengwar?

[QUOTE=Arien]
121. Silmarien: Still not right
122. Uh, Earendil? CORRECT!!!

[QUOTE=What Exit?]

Ack 121 is right, I thought you were answering the First Ruling queen question. :smack:
Arien both were right, sorry. ::walks aways muttering to self:: “I’m a twit”

Feanor

  1. Scepter of Annuminas and Ring of Barahir.

And that’s my answer to 123b) What heirlooms did Silmarien’s father give her that were eventually handed down to Aragorn? Not 123) Which two members of Thorin and Co. were particularly good at starting fires with flint and tinder? Which I believe is Fili and Kili.

  1. What were Samwise and Hamfast Gamgee’s actual full names?
  2. What were Frodo and Bilbo’s actual first names?

Froda and Bilba? I remember one of the appendices mentioning that the masculine ending was actually in -a.
