Tolkien trivia contest

No-one’s got the question about the Bucklanders’ November celebration, so I’ll show off my cleverness: They blew the Horn of the Mark (Merry’s, during his lifetime) at sunset, and then lit bonfires and held feasts. It was, of course, the anniversary of the Raising of the Shire that led to Sharkey’s overthrow.

Oh, and:

  1. Halbarad.

    • What became of him?

That’s what I was thinking of when I pose the question - but I stand to be corrected, I haven’t had a chance to look it up myself yet…

Grim

He died on the Pellenor Fields.

  1. What Ent was regarded as “hasty” and why?
  2. What happened to Elendil’s father?
  1. Quickbeam, answered an elder Ent’s question before he finished asking it.
  2. Amandil sailed into the west to warn the Valar of Ar-Pharazon’s plans, and to ask for mercy. Never heard from again.

Hey, I said I was cheating! Then I compounded my error by looking up just the minimal amount of info to try to answer it.

No guts, no glory.

Correct! And I’m very glad you crossed that last one out… Middle-earth is in big trouble if Randall Flagg is ever confused with Aragorn.

…and Eldarion and his descendants, of course.

110: What is a proper fourteen-twenty?

a) ale

  1. How many swans led Tuor?

Isn’t Wingfoot a horse: Snowmane’s sire? “Wingfoot’s foal, swift Snowmane, something something, but master’s bane?” Theoden’s mount on the Pelennor?

Late to the party, I know.

111: Carc’s son’s name?

Dammit. 112: Carc’ son’s name?

I am guessing 7.

A Good Mug of Ale, called that because the Ale was so good in the Blessed year of 1420 SR.

  1. Who Fostered Tuor?

Annael of the Grey Elves.

  1. How did Aragorn’s father die?
  2. Who was the first ruling Queen of Numenor?
  3. What was Merry’s real name, that Meriadoc Brandybuck is a translation of?

115: Telperian I believe, who’s namesake is on the SDMB.
116: Kalimac?

  1. Who was the first Ship King of Numenor?

“Faithful servant yet master’s bane; Lightfoot’s foal, swift Snowmane”. Eomer gave Aragorn the name “Wingfoot” based on how many leagues they’d travelled in under three days, deeming the name “Strider” too little by half.

Catching up. Thank most of you for using periods in your numbers. Changing parens and colons to periods was a pain in the patootie.
2. Who was the first elf to love a mortal? (not really #2–a broken number sequence)
Aegnor, whose death is pretty much the only time he is mentioned in the Silmarillion. Andreth is a woman from the House of Beor. They fell in love but Aegnor wimped out, for various reasons, and they never wed. He died soon later, “soon” meaning about 60-70 years after they met. Also apparently Aegnor had spiky, blond hair, although I think Tolkien phrased it something like “his locks rose from his head like flames.” (Arien answering her own question, since everyone failed so miserably)

  1. Where is Boromir killed?
    Amon Hen (Arien)

  2. Name Frodo’s Parents
    Drogo (Humble Servant)
    Primula Brandybuck (5 time champ)

  3. What is the Sindarin name for the valley between Ered Gorgoroth and the northern boundary of Doriath in Beleriand?
    Nan Dungortheb (Qadgop the Mercotan)

62a. What particular danger was that valley known for?
Spiders (Qadgop the Mercotan)

  1. Name Shadowfax’s most famous forebear.
    Nahar (Qadgop the Mercotan)

  2. Who was Elendil’s Heir?
Elendil’s heir (IMHO) would be both the king of Arnor, and the high king over both Arnor and Gondor, to whom all faithful Edain owed their allegience.
In point of fact, only 2 people achieved this: Isildur and Aragorn II.
…and Eldarion and his descendants, of course. (Elendil’s Heir)

  3. What common English first name appears more often than any other (given to different individuals) in the Tolkien canon?
    Tom (Qadgop the Mercotan)
Bill or William as the common English first name used more than any other by JRRT (William the troll in The Hobbit; Bill the pony and Bill Ferny in LOTR). I don’t think there were three Toms, were there? (Elendil’s Heir)
[have we agreed on an answer?]
Bombadil, Maggot, and Cotton were all Tom. So that one’s a tie, unless someone comes up with another Tom or Bill. (Chronos)

  4. Who recited that poem and where?
    Sam (Malacandra)
During their camp in the Midgewater Marshes (NoCoolUserName)

  5. After the War, how did the Bucklanders celebrate November 2nd and why?
They blew the Horn of the Mark (Merry’s, during his lifetime) at sunset, and then lit bonfires and held feasts. It was, of course, the anniversary of the Raising of the Shire that led to Sharkey’s overthrow. (Malacandra answers own question to show off cleverness)

  6. Who was Gil-galad’s father? [out of order becausing of a numbering anomaly]
Fingon sired Erenion Gil-Galad per the canon, tho JRRT was re-thinking that pedigree, and at one point considered having Orodreth be his father. Among others. (Qadgop the Mercotan)

  7. List five other names by which Aragorn was known during his lifetime.
Estel, Strider, Thorongil, Elfstone, Elessar, Longshanks, Trotter (Qadgop the Mercotan)

Scatha the worm (Qadgop the Mercotan)

  10. What town in Valinor had a “fishy” name?
    Tuna (What Exit?)

(unnumbered) when listing his name, Gandalf says “to the East I go not.” Why not?
The West was his assignment. The East was assigned to the two Blue Wizards. (In the HO of What Exit?)

  1. Who was named Captain of the White Company?
    Beregond (Arien)

  2. What was their mission?

  3. How many guests were invited to the Long Expected Party?
144 or one gross. But even people not invited showed up. (Arien)
More than a gross; that was just the number in the main tent. No number is given for the entire total, but it was darned near all of Hobbiton. (Chronos)

  4. What was the number of coneys present to Sam?
Two, I believe, plus a third that Smeagol snared for himself, rather than eat it burned and with nasty stinking herbs. (Chronos)
“A brace o’ coneys” according to Sam (NoCoolUserName)

  5. Who was the first Ruling Steward of Gondor?

    • What became of him [Halbarad]?
He died on the Pellenor Fields (Arien)
  6. What Ent was regarded as “hasty” and why?
Quickbeam, answered an elder Ent’s question before he finished asking it. (Qadgop the Mercotan)

  7. What happened to Elendil’s father?
Amandil sailed into the west to warn the Valar of Ar-Pharazon’s plans, and to ask for mercy. Never heard from again. (Qadgop the Mercotan)

    (earlier questions as yet unanswered)

  1. Name the Three Remarkable Daughters of the Old Took
    Belladonna Took (What Exit?)
    [two more needed]

(unnumbered) What does Bagronk mean, and in what language?

Excellent work, NoCoolUserName, but you missed a few things. Sorry about those number anomolies, some of which were my fault.

This one is wrong, sorry, What Exit?. Tar-Telperien was the second ruling Queen.

Qadgop the Mercotan answered this one already. It was Mardil.

I answered this one a few posts ago, a Sindarin elf named Annael.

He was tortured by Sauron.

  1. Where did Radagast live?
  2. Who found Isildur’s remains?
  3. What Vala were Sauron and Saruman associated with, before they became all evil?
