Tolkien trivia contest

There, there, don’t beat yourself up. We all have our off days.

I was going to answer the question but I see in preview that Qadgop is emailing the answer to someone else instead of answering it on the board, so I guess it’s still on the table.

And I received and replied to your e-mail, Qadgop.

Yeah, I won’t answer it here, since I cheated and consulted my hardcover. I’ll let you have the privilege of answering it when you want on the board!

And I replied to your reply! Thanks!

Now for some trivia!
54) What was Morgoth’s Ring?

Sounds good otherwise I would now have to start looking it up.
To keep the questions going: lets leave them for someone else QtM
55) Name the Mountain that contains the major Goblin/Orc Kingdom in the North of the Misty Mountains where the meet the Grey Mountains.
56) What is the Elvish name of the Grey Mountains?
57) What is the only Town shown on the map between Bree and Rohan?
**One hopefully extra hard one for anyone: **
58) What number was the hall closest to the Chamber of Records?

Jim

The World, itself. Into it he poured his malice, just as Sauron poured his into the Ash Nahz Gimbatul.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen the name in Elvish, but I know what it’d start with… The Mithty Mountains?

The Elvish name is on some of the maps.

Gray Mountains = Ered Mithrin

Where were all you guys when I was a teenager (and a 20-somethinger and 30-somethinger) and the only one I knew who read these books over and over and didn’t have anyone to talk to about all this?
I am very, very rusty on my trivia but I did know who Arien was, it’s my favorite name. All the other ones I knew were answered way too quickly. I am cursed with a poor memory and not having read the books in a while. I guess it’s time to read up again.

I don’t think this was answered so I am going to take a wild guess which is probably wrong but for some reason the word “Rohern” popped into my head.

My question’s still open…

  1. Who was Cirdan’s representative at the Council of Rivendell?

( I would never remember this from the books, but he was a character in the Middle-Earth CCG, so I remember him.)

  1. Name the Mountain that contains the major Goblin/Orc Kingdom in the North of the Misty Mountains where the meet the Grey Mountains.
  • Gundabad I think
  1. What is the only Town shown on the map between Bree and Rohan?

Tharbad, IIRC.

So I take it you’re looking up the answer?

  1. Erestor?

He called it the “tongue of Rohan” a few times, and Rohanese in some of his notes. His linguistic students suspect that calling Rohirian would be consistant with his approach to language. It was Robert Foster who coined the term “Rohirric”, which JRRT didn’t use, as far as can be found out.

  1. Galdor?
  1. Hall Twenty-One.
  2. If the answer is 42, what’s the question? :stuck_out_tongue:
  1. What was the name of the dwarven jewelled necklace into which one of the silmarils was inlaid?
  1. Tharbad: If besides being a fan, you are either a Cartographer hobbyist or played MERP* the question was something you can remember.

  2. Gundabad is correct

  3. JayJay: correct on Ered Mithrin

  4. Malacandra: Hall Twenty-One. Is correct. That is an impressive memory. Pretty obscure unless you read it recently.

**59) How many Orcs did Gimli kill in that battle at Helm’s deep. **

Jim

  • Middle Earth Role Playing Game

The Nauglamir

  1. What is the Halcaraxe?

  2. What is the Sindarin name for the valley between Ered Gorgoroth and the northern boundary of Doriath in Beleriand?

62a) What particular danger was that valley known for?
