Thankyou!
And with that, all concerns of the OP are fully addressed. Thank you.
Sweet. Now let’s all shut the fuck up, and have a snack.
Nice one.
Good then.
Erm, Tom, you may not be aware of all the definitions of the word “profanity.” It may help if you look at the dictionary.
- the quality of being profane; irreverence.
- profane conduct or language; a profane act or utterance.
- obscenity.
I assume that you only know definition 1. When you say "there is nothing profane about “cunt”’ you are presumably assuming that profane means “characterized by irreverence or contempt for god or sacred principles or things” and that profanity means the same.
I draw your attention to definition no 3. Profanity *can *mean “contempt for god” but also can mean “obscenity.” Clearly, mhendo was using this definition.
You accused mhendo of changing the topic. Obviously, he did no such thing. Yet another wrongful accusation you have made. There’s someone else you owe an apology to.
This sort of semantic hairsplitting is incredibly unhelpful.
What determines what’s “manufactured drama”? Anybody who obstinately disagrees with you? That’s handy.
I’ve noticed this problem, too. Certain board participants–both posters and staff–roll their eyes at people who start threads like this. But there would be no need for them to go on… and on… and on… if certain mods dind’t have to have their arms twisted to admit their mistakes.
And when you are a person who has a position of power, admitting your mistakes publicly comes along with the territory.
If you think being asked to admit that you made an incorrect ruling because you let your personal preferences take precedence over the explicit rules of the board you moderate is being treated like crap, you need to step down as a moderator.
We don’t have that many rules. For any moderator or admin to not be absolutely clear on all of them is incomprehensible to me.
You have *no idea *why anyone would ask you to come back and clarify what you meant, when what you said was *still *in conflict with the rules of the board? Really?
For any online community to function properly, everyone has to be in agreement about what the rules are. When the person who is confused is one of those responsible for enforcing the rules, it’s in everyone’s best interests to correct that misunderstanding.
Which you (and the others) knew all along, after Tom issued his first rather gracious apology. This is why we dont see the Mods admitting they are wrong very often- even when they do so, certain posters insist upon holding their toes to the fire until they admit every portion of what *could *be wrong. No one here really thought for a second that Tom was changing the rules over the usage of a certain word. It was clear he just mis-spoke. Jesusfuckingcristonapogostick.

…
Sorry, but your post is so disconnected with anything I actually posted in here, I can’t think of a serious response.
What does that have to do with anything? Speaking personally, I care as much about firmly establishing the rules of the board as I do about mods admitting their mistakes per se. I was going to say “more than,” but then I realized that having people in charge who publicly and clearly state when they were wrong is very important to me.
Thanks for telling me what I think. Maybe this weekend you could come hang out and let me know who I should vote for on November 2. It would save me some time doing research.
Sorry, do you need me to quote the post again? The post that you made in this thread? In here, as it were?
You, personally, don’t think restrictions of the use of the word “cunt” are a bad idea or a big deal. Therefore, you classify any comments on them as “manufactured drama.” Because *you *don’t think the rules are a problem, clearly anyone who thinks they *do *matter is just shit-stirring, Q.E.D., no further analysis required.
Bullshit.
From what he actually posted, it was entirely unclear what the fuck he meant.
Also, if I’m not mistaken, this is my fourth post in this thread. The OP, a request for clarification, a rather gracious acknowledgment of that clarification, and this response.
Yes. I need you to quote the post where I said that “Anybody who obstinately disagrees with (me)” was manufactured drama.
Let’s see it.
False. There is constant confusion on this board as to what the rules are, especially regarding language. I see “I can’t call Rush/Hannity/Big Bird what I really want, since I’m not in the Pit” fairly regularly - and it’s confusing posts like Tom’s first one in this thread that perpetuate it. In fact, his post suggested that he too was confused as to what the language rules were, and we wanted clarification so we wouldn’t have to go through this again. His attempts at ridiculous hairsplitting to avoid the issue certainly didn’t help any.
Look Shot, you’re picking on the wrong person here. Let me explain.
I did not say that.
I said I wanted the “cuntroversy” to end. In fact, from my first post, I said.
(emphasis added)
That doesn’t contain anything about me saying “Anybody who obstinately disagrees with (me)” was manufactured drama.
It means that I don’t care what the reasons are - the more restrictive rules, Moderator error, Member error, whatever. I’m tired of it still being an issue. If the solution is easing the Rules, better Moderator instructions, or Members behaving themselves, I’m tired of the issue coming up again and again. This is not in conflict with my defending Ed in an effort to clean up the board. There may be better ways to accomplish his goal, ones which do not end up via one means or another causing an ATMB thread o’ the week bitching about something. I’m not in charge of the message board so obviously all I can do is opine.
I’m not blaming any one person or one group, I’m saying the system needs work. That’s hardly controversial.
My second post in this thread expanded slightly:
(emphasis added)
…but still did not say anything about “Anybody who obstinately disagrees with (me)” was manufactured drama.
This was a simple expression of me wanting the bickering etc. to end, whether that was via Rules changes, action from Moderators, or action from Members. You read into my post something which was not there.
My third post in this thread was inconsequential and in any event did not say anything about “Anybody who obstinately disagrees with (me)” was manufactured drama. The fourth post was directed towards you, as were the fifth and the sixth here.
That is it.
Jeebus on a cracker, wouldn’t it save a hell of a lot of time and hassle on everybody’s part if this sort of simple, straightforward question could be answered simply and straightforwardly right off the bat? What in the name of all that is holy does it benefit anyone to drag it out for three goddamn days? And why does it seem like it’s like this for every fucking thread questioning a mod ruling?
To be fair, ofttimes it isn’t the mod’s fault.
Especially in Tom’s case. It’s hardly ever his fault.
Well, there was no simple, straightforward question.
The OP appeared to ask such, but you’d have to assume that either he was a complete idiot or a total naif to not know it was a simple mistake at the get go, or to simply use one of a half-dozen or so ways to ask Tom directly. Since we can assume the OP is neither, it’s clear to me it was just mod-baiting.
Of course, if you like, you can assume the OP was either a complete idiot or a total naif, or that somehow he could start a thread but was unable to ask a question using PM, email, etc.
Within a short period of time, a Admin came in and posted "The rule about directing certain expressions at other posters is a Pit rule. " That makes it clear:
1 it’s a PIT rule
2 and it’s only about directing certain expressions at other posters.
And Tom came by at his first opp, and like the mensch* he is- apologized.
Why does it seem like it goes on for three days? Becuase certain posters like to mod-bait and stir shit up.
- but before he gets his head all swelled up- he’s dead wrong about 90% of the time on the political front.
Please take this to the Pit, where I can respond appropriately.
