The “Tony Sinclair” character in the Tanqueray ads…isn’t that Robert Townsend?
No, per Wikipedia, he is an actor named Rodney Mason. And Wikipedia is never wrong.
I dunno, but am I the only person who finds the character to be… racially exploitive in some way? I can’t put my finger on it, but he feels like a Steppin Fetchit-type, with pretty clothes. It skeeves me out every time I see the commercials. Apologies if I’m off base, but it bugs me…

I thought it was merely exploiting the American tendency to infer that anything said in an English accent is automatically classier.
I absolutely hate those commercials.Insultingly stupid.
You could take the word “those” out of that first sentence and your statement would still be true.
Definitely not - Townsend is much older, though I can acknowledge a passing resemblance. One of the most annoying characters in a current ad, I’d say…
…actually, it’s that guy who’s in the Bailey’s commercials, who asks people to take him to parties so he can simply imbibe, or who can’t master placing ice cubes in a glass, so he pours the Bailey’s into the ice dispenser and sucks it out with a straw. Inconsiderate, nasty fuckwipe!
What is it with hard liquor ads, anyway? The Tanq ads aren’t the only annoying ones. That awful mess for DiSorono is just ghastly. I want to smack both the woman and the creepy bartender.
Bacardi & Cola–they get the job done!
Those I like.
I love those commericals, as if rum and Coke is some kind of revelation to most people.
I liked the old Captain Morgan’s ads, with the real-life Captain Morgan who was always standing in his Captain Morgan pose.
I kinda like the Red Stripe dude… as long as I was just there for a beer and not a 6 pack.
