I’ve been on an H.P. Lovecraft binge as of late, and it got my over-active imagination jogging. I know the Necronomicon (that can be bought in any mall book franchise) is bull pookie, but:
Does anyone think there are really (or think its a possibilty) anciend monsters/inter-dimentional being asleep deep inside the earth’s crust/oceans/polar ice caps?
Actually, Dr. Raymond Bernard showed quite convincingly that there are quite a lot of interesting goings-on beneath the Earth’s crust in his classic treatise on the subject, “The Hollow Earth.”
It’ll make you a believer (so long as you don’t also read Martin Gardner.)
I don’t believe it, but I’m very open to the possibility if given evidence, and I’d love to see proof of some kind of lost city. Does that make me a romantic? To want find that there really are creepy ancient things still out there?
Certainly very possible. Not in the physical sense, perhaps (I don’t really expect that we’ll be eating canned Dhol meat anytime soon) but everything that people can bother to imagine takes on a reality of its own. Lovecraft is perhaps one of the more interesting writers in his genre, first of all because of the period in which he wrote (one of the original horror writers, to be sure) and secondly because so many people give him the implied authority of a prophet who has spoken of things that are, but cannot be comprehended by any but the greatest of dreamers and the insane. I read a very interesting short story recently on the Necronomicon, which I recommend to anyone who enjoys Lovecraft and his disciples: The Adder, by Fred Chappell. It’s in the anthology called Cthulhu 2000, edited by Jim Turner, published by Del Rey. “If the Necronomicon existed, it would be remaindered in discount stores by now,” or something similar was said by the main character. The thought occurs that perhaps the book really does exist, but that anyone who laid hands on it would covet its hidden knowledge and power, if not fear it… who would send it to be reprinted??? Besides, ANY book of magic is generally altered in a way detectable to the “initiated” of the order that wrote the book in the first place, to keep the power in the hands of those who wish to control it. So, logically, if there were books of mystic power out there, they would NEVER have fallen into the hands of the masses… and anyone dumb enough to take such a book to the public would probably have done one of the rituals (sloppily, you can bet) and gotten himself eaten by a Shoggoth. Funny old world, isn’t it?
*“If the Necronomicon existed, it would be remaindered in discount stores by now,” or something similar was said by the main character. *
Seeing as five or six bogus Necronomicons have been published over the last several decades, and at least a couple of 'em can still be found at or ordered through shopping mall bookstores, this comment isn’t too much of an exaggeration.
Are there any authentic ancient grimoires of forbidden lore out there anywhere? I’m talking about stuff dating from at least the middle ages, not things like LaVey’s * Satanic Bible.*
It’s a city with a large harbor. There are immigrants of all kinds here. But, lately I’ve been noticing people with the Insmouth look. I’ve started wondering.
How big would a conspiracy to conceal the existence of Deep Ones have to be? Look at how long the coelocanth, the goblin shark, or the mega-mouth shark remained hidden. Now, imagine how much longer an inteligent creature could hide. How many people would know? How many humans ever go deep enough underwater? The general populace watches the Discovery channel and laughs at the notion of great and ancient cities in the deeps. But how many of them have been to the Trench zone?
A few thousand. Only that many researchers, subamrine crews, and other people would have to edit the films and hide radar findings. Only that many people would be needed to cover the truth.
But, in my dreams, I have seen. Unknowing, I opened the gate. I looked upon the glass snake with skin of spikes and eyes of filthy light. I have swam avenues of deathless cities, amid gardens of leprous plants. Others, smiling, joyless others, have come from their abodes to swim with me. I have Ia Ia seen the truth. But Ftaghn y’o ngllth there is hope. They pth’niyee can be stopped! Humanity can prevail! If only we Oh Father Dagon! Yea shall we rise out of the depths and destroy them! That which is not dead, may eternal lie. And with strange eons, even death may die! P’tyah ni’ofkn R’yleh! Ia Ia Cthulhu f’taghn!
The monsters within the earth’s crust seem tame and are deceptively friendly. They have already risen to bring their horror to the world.
What?! Like you have a better explanation for “Teletubbies?”
