Tooth pain and bad timing

10 years I’ve gone without having any sort of tooth pain. Ten.Years. Yet, when I do finally get something, it decides to happen at 9pm on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. So I’ve been sitting here for two days now, doing whatever I can to ease the throbbing pain. Orajel, brushing constantly, swishing around warm salt water, taking prescription strength ibuprofen I have left over (those work the best). And I can’t have a damn thing done about this tooth until Monday. Because of the stupid holiday. I thought at least ONE dentist would be open today, but apparently not. The pain isn’t so terrible that I feel ok calling the ‘dental emergency’ number that’s on the answering machine. But it’s definitely annoying the hell out of me and making my weekend less than enjoyable. B( So yeah. Just had to get that off my chest.

If it is bad I would call the emergency hotline. Could be an abcess or whatever. I am sure a dental professional will be along to give more accurate advice, but I am a sook.

Well…after I thought I had a cough bad enough to go to the doctor and was told it was just a cold…I’m a bit gunshy. I know it hurts so there’s obviously something wrong, but I don’t feel it hurts ENOUGH to justify ruining someone’s holiday weekend.

Yeah, it definitely could be an abcess, which in addition to causing pain, could be life-threatening if left long enough. The dentist may want to just call you in some antibiotics, which isn’t that much work for him. Give him a chance to help you and don’t just suffer.

BTW, what is a sook?

Do you have a regular dentist? Your dental clinic might have someone on call. And as far as ruining a holiday, I used to work for a medical answering service and it is simply part of the doctor’s job to deal with emergencies on weekends and holidays. You’re a patient and a customer and you’re in pain, but know that sometimes doctors can be jerks and it is not your fault.

I’m guessing from experience but I think they mean “suck”. The OP may be from the east coast?? The only time I’ve heard sook or sookie is from east coast people (Canadians actually but it may extend into the US).

To the OP…hope it gets better for you! Tooth pain sucks!

The pain’s eased up…which I’m not sure if that’s a good sign or a bad sign. It’s still there but more like…if I don’t think about it, I don’t notice it. What actually has been bothering now is apparently a wisdom tooth (not in the area of the toothache) has decided now is a great time to push on through! Did NOT expect to be dealing with wisdom teeth in my 30s. Of course, great timing. Either way, I’ll be making an appointment on Monday. I might have to lie and say it REALLY hurts though…since my insurance only covers ‘emergency dental’. Thanks guys
