Of all time? Of the week? Of Whenever?
Here’s what I’m playing this week, incessantly:
- Sonic Youth - “Sister”
- Mouse on Mars- “radical connector”
- the Divine Comedy- “absent friends”
- Bruce Haack - “Electric Luciver”
- the Congos- “heart of the congos”
- His name is alive - “rare tracks in the snow”
- Kan Kick - “the traditional heritage”
- Minutemen- “double nickles on the dime”
- OMD - “dazzle ships”
- various - “the third unheard: conneticut hip hop '79-'83”
Great, great, great stuff. I think “yerself” is inferior to “boces,” but I’ll be damned if “coney island cyclone” isn’t one of the best Rev songs. And big ups on “i want to see the bright lights tonight” - one of my perennial favorites.
Man…It looks like good ole Metal is being forgotten about. I’ll wave the battleflag and put down my idea of the greatest in Metal!!! (in no particular order, mind you…)
-
Slayer - Reign in Blood (This is truly my #1!! It doesnt get any better than this folks!! I just wish the album were a whole lot longer.)
-
Metallica - Kill 'em All
-
Megadeth - Rust in Peace
-
Anthrax - Among The Living
-
Sepultura - Beneath The Remains
-
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
-
Ozzy - Blizzard of Oz
-
Exodus - Bonded By Blood
-
Agnostic Front - Victim in Pain (NYHC at it’s best!!)
-
S.O.D. - Speak English or Die (Just plain heavy, baby!!)
Later…
I considered putting Mercury Rev on there, but decided that since my appreciation of them is recentish I’d wait a while to elevate them to that status. Besides, I’ve been on an early-Bowie kick and was astonished to note the similarities; have to go back to Rev and decide if it’s theft or tribute.
And man, I wish I had more room. I thought I was vaguely justified in listing 35 titles because I own about 3,000 CDs; narrowing it to just 10 would be agonizing. But reading this thread makes me sad for the stuff I left off:
And a few more; I just got tired of cutting and pasting.
- Alice in Chains - Dirt
- Nirvana - Nevermind
- Beatles - Seargeant Pepper
- Sepultura - Roots
- Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings: Soundtrack
- Stone Temple Pilots: Purple
- Pearl Jam: their fourth album
- Billy Joel: River of Dreams
- Nirvana - In Utero
- Alice in Chains - Self Titled(or Tripod).
This task is totally impossible. Only ten? In order?
Soo…
Just to make it more interesting. I’ve compiled my top ten from everyone elses top tens. The tricky thing about this is although I have and love all the following, the wouldn’t necessarily be my choice for each artist’s best album.
No particular order though…
Out of the Blue - ELO
Belle and Sebastian - If You’re Feeling Sinister
So- Peter Gabriel
Steely Dan, Aja
Ben Folds - Live
English Settlement – XTC
Whatever And Ever Amen - Ben Folds Five
Time - ELO
Belle and Sebastian - The Boy With the Arab Strap
Teenage Fanclub - Songs From Northern Britain
Thrash isn’t really my favorite style, but there are ten good albums on The Master Killer’s list.
I’m not going to try to put this in any kind of numerical order, but here’s a reasonable guess at my top ten:
Black Sabbath, Paranoid
Death, The Sound of Perseverance
Emperor, Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk
Helloween, Keeper of the Seven Keys Pt. 1
Lacrimosa, Fassade
Morbid Angel, Covenant
Opeth, Morningrise
Symphony X, V: The New Mythology Suite
Therion, Theli
Within Temptation, Mother Earth
Ultrafilter,
You have some very good bands listed there, though I would choose different albums... (not a disagreement, just differing tastes.)
Death - Spiritual Healing
Opeth - Deliverance
I think I left some stuff off my list and I’d like the opportunity to rectify that here…
Celtic Frost - To Mega Therion
Kreator - Extreme Aggression
Sodom - Persecution Mania
Biohazard - Biohazard (Thier first and, in my opinion, best album. Straight up NYHC.)
Wargasm - Ugly
Damn…there are just so many. I couldnt survive without the stuff on these lists, but when I think about it, there is so much more that I depend upon for my headbanging and listening enjoyment. But, I dont limit myself to just metal…so here’s a list of my essential Rap… also in no particular order.
-
Public Enemy - It takes a nation of millions to hold us back.
-
Ice-T - O.G.
-
Geto Boys - Geto Boys
-
Kool G. Rap - Live and Let Die. (This is, without a doubt, my favorite album in this genre. G. Rap is just such a bad ass gangsta storyteller. It’s all about the stories with G. Rap and they are all good.!!)

N.W.A. - Straight Outta Comption
-
Beastie Boys - Pauls Boutique
-
Dr. Dre - The Chronic
-
Snoop Doggy Dog - DoggyStyle
