I know a lot of people find it fashionable to bash The Duke for everything bad about the “American Attitude”, but screw 'em. He was ultimate Man in his roles, and I think it’s high time he got recognized for it here.
So with that in mind, what are your top five favorite John Wayne movies?
Mine:
Big Jake: I love the interaction between Jake and his sons, as well as Jake standing as sort of the last hero of a passing age.
True Grit: Used to be #1, but Jake has grown on me as I’ve gotten older. “Fill your hands, you son of a bitch,” is one of my favorite movie lines of all time.
The Shootist: Truly a passing of the torch film, and a genuine, believeable performance about a man who wants to die on his own terms while finishing his ersonal business. Not to mention that even an older Lauren Bacall is still sexier and more lovely than any female actor working today.
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence: Duke plays the ultimate anti-hero who makes good through a noble gesture, and Jimmy Stewart is at his “gee shucks” best, combined with a darkness that comes from carrying Duke’s secret all those years.
El Dorado: Probably the most out and out fun Western of all time, and Robert Mitchum and the Duke together (with Mitchum as a stumbling drunk) have great chemistry.
Don’t really have a top 5, you’d have to ask my sister for that. Buy my favorite John Wayne film, and one of my favorite films ever, is The Quiet Man. I just love that movie.
Pick any ten. Or twenty. Hell, all Duke movies are my top ten. if it’s got The Duke, I’ll watch it.
Quiet Man, of course, is impossible for me NOT to watch several times a year. I like to watch Quiet Man and then watch McClintock. John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara together is comfort food for the soul.
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon – one of Wayne’s finest performances. He was upset he didn’t get an Oscar nomination, and he was right.
Fort Apache – Goes against the stereotypes: Wayne is the cavaryman who wants to treat the Indians decently and understands that they are attacking because they got shafted. The ending is great, and shows what Liberty Valence is often quoted for.
Stagecoach – From the first shot, you knew he was a star. Great movie, too.
It’s hard for me to create a list. But at 1 or 2 would be The Quiet Man. Makes me want to move to Inishfree (spelling error!). I’d watch it with my parents (two huge Duke fans) every St. Pat’s Day. Another on my list would be Warwagon, with Kirk Douglas co staring. There’s a funny scene where Kirk explains to a woman the reason he has a dimple in his chin is because he sleeps on his ring.
Another vote here for The Quiet Man, one of my favorite films. I also like most of the others named here except The Conquerer (of course SPOOFE was only spoofin’ – right?). Add Wings of Eagles and Sands of Iwo Jima.
I thought I had seen most of John Wayne’s films, but I admit I’ve never even heard of **The Shepherd of the Hills ** or The Long Voyage Home. Where did I go wrong?
Actually, I think it was a Firebird (I don’t remember there being a scoop on the back or the big flaming turkey on the hood), and I’m pretty sure the sub machine gun was an Ingram MAC 10. It was fun, but I remember seeing it at age 10 or so and saying over and over…
SPOILER
She hid it in your car, man. Over and over WAY before he figured it out.
