Top 40 doctors

The Offspring’s drummer was fired because he wouldn’t get vaccinated. According to him he has underlying issues but apparently couldn’t convince his boss, Doctor of Molecular Biology Dexter Howland, of this. There’s the guy in Queen, Dr. May and another British guy who I cannot remember his name and knew him as a science-talker in English science TV shows before I found out he was a two hit wonder. If someone can figure out who I’m talking about, I’d be very appreciative.

Are there any other Dr. Top40s out there? Honorary degrees don’t count!

Brian Cox?

YES! Thank you!

Greg Graffin, vocalist for punk band Bad Religion, has a PhD in zoology, and has taught at UCLA and Cornell.

Sterling Morrison, late guitarist for the Velvet Underground, had a PhD in Medieval Literature.

This list also includes actors and other artists, but there are several Dr. Top40s on the list.

I like the “Excluded are honorary degrees”. Wiki agrees with me that they don’t count.

I got a near miss - Hank Wangford And The Lost Cowboys. Big plus - Hank is a medical doctor, a gynecologist if I remember correctly. Suffolk, England’s trail-blazing country star had some success, but no top 40 hit that I’m aware of.

Here is the good doctor doing his thing:

ETA - I meant to add the wiki page - here it is

I assume the degrees of Dr. Demento, Dr. Dre, Dr. Hook, and Dr. John the Night Tripper are honorary, though.

Ferocious Australian band Radio Birdman had guitarist Deniz Tek, who is an emergency medicine doctor and ex Flight Surgeon.

If you allow Dr Hook then you may as well include these guys.

I wish we could get Greg in political office although he absolutely refuses …

Not the Good Doctor’s.

Barret Hansen M.A. '67 has a master’s degree in folklore and ethnomusicology from UCLA. But rock history buffs know him better as Dr. Demento , the off-the-wall disc jockey who’s been bringing listeners “mad music and crazy comedy” for almost 40 years, including launching the career, for better or worse, of “Weird” Al Yankovic.

A master’s degree isn’t a doctorate.

As with Hootie, Dr. Hook doesn’t really exist.
