I’m looking for new (to me) music. I like everything. I don’t care if your favorite album right now is 10 years old, lay it on me…
Happy Rhodes - Find Me (link is to the MySpace page with 4 full songs and snippets of the rest).
I only have one top album at the moment, and that’s it, but that’s because I’m a die-hard besotted fan, and I’d been waiting 9 years for it (this is her 11th album, and her last album before this one was released in 1998).
Vitalic Ok, Cowboy
Like a mixture of Air, Daft Punk, Kraftwerk and Miss Kitten.
Reet now, I’m listening to:
Funeral - Arcade Fire (3 years after everyone else!)
The Neon Bible - Arcade Fire
The Woods - Sleater Kinney
Era Vulgaris - QotSA
10’000 Fall fans can’t be wrong - a complilation of The Fall
All awesome save Era Vulgaris which I’m listening to to try and convince myself its really any good (its not) before seeing the Queens live next month.
Don’t know if you will like any of these, but I figure I’ll give it a shot…
Matt Nathanson - At the point (I’m waiting to buy Some Mad Hope until next month, so I can’t say much about it)
Martin Sexton - Wonderbar (my favorite of his)
Todd Snider - East Nashville Skyline
Tony Xenos - Birthday (this guy was my math teacher, which makes it even cooler)
The Shantee - Four Now (I wish these guys were still together. Amazing in concert and just a fun band)
Brendon Small
“Neon Bible” - Arcade Fire: Beautiful and layered, this is the best album of 2007 for me.
“Because of the Times” - Kings of Leon: Fun yet inconsistent, somewhat dark, crammed with various styles and “love them or hate them” vocals. I love them.
“In Rainbows” - Radiohead: I haven’t listened to this one enough to get a great sense of it yet, but so far…fantastic. The only Radiohead albums I’d put ahead of it: The Bend, Ok Computer, and maybe Kid A (ask me again tomorrow and I’ll tell you something different). Bonus points for letting you name your own price to download.
“In Your Honor” - Foo Fighters: I bought this a few years ago, listened to it a few times and forgot about it. Dusted it off recently and was blown away. Trim it down to a single CD and it would be a masterpiece (which is true of most double albums).
“Meddle” - Pink Floyd: Finally got around to giving this a spin after playing all the “essential” Pink Floyd albums to death. Where have you been all my life?!? Not everything here works, but the stuff that does work is good old fashion sweet Pink Floyd goodness.
My faves so far this year:
Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare
The Good, the Bad, & the Queen - s/t
Radiohead - In Rainbows
Art Brut - It’s a Bit Complicated
Black Francis/Frank Black - Bluefinger
My Morning Jacket - “Okonokos” - live recording. All of their albums are great. This a nice sampling of older and newer stuff in a live setting. They rock.
Band of Horses - “Cease to Begin” - good rock with a folksy vibe. Their other album kicks ass too.
Aesop Rock - “None Shall Pass” - Killer underground hip-hop. Again, other albums kick ass.
M Ward - “Transistor Radio” - mellow folky rock. His other albums are also very good.
The Hold Steady - “Separation Sunday” - Kick ass rock and roll. Get a lot of comparison to the Boss. All of their albums are great…this is just one I am really digging right now.
Currently obsessing over:
Aimee Mann - The Forgotten Arm (2005)
Buckingham Nicks - Buckingham Nicks (1973)
Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings the Flood (2006)
Johnny Cash - Unchained (1996)
William Shatner - Has Been (2004)
I really like Mark Knopfler’s new album, Kill to Get Crimson, a lot.
**Wilco ** - Sky Blue Sky
**Radiohead ** - In Rainbows
**Band of Horses ** - Cease to Begin
**Amy Winehouse ** - Back to Black
**Guster ** - Ganging Up on the Sun
The Polyphonic Spree - The Fragile Army
Pearl Jam - Yield
Grindhouse: Death Proof Soundtrack
Grindhouse: Planet Terror Soundtrack
Our Lady Peace - Naveed
These aren’t necessarily top 5 of all time, but just what I’ve been listening to lately.
Slim Cessna’s Auto Club – The Bloudy Tenant, Truth, Peace
HUMANWINE – Fighting Naked
Jill Tracy – Diabolical Streak
Akira the Don – When We Were Young
Falkenbach – Ok Nefna Tysvar Ty
On deck, just as soon as I can afford it: Ulver – Shadows of the Sun
Old Crow Medicine Show - Big Iron Box
Alt-Country/Americana sort of thing. They do some pre-WW2 songs and a few originals. Very solid stuff. They’re coming to town in a couple of days, and I hope to see them (maybe).
**
Animal Collective - Feel**
Sort of an experimental indie pop thing. You’ll dig it if you’ve heard of Islands or The Unicorns.
theSTART - Shakedown!
Nitpick: It’s Big Iron World.
And their self-titled first album was very good too. They’re one of my new favorites.
I second Wilco’s Sky Blue Sky, and submit Son Volt’s 2005 (but new to me) album Okemah and the Melody of Riot.
Also, Franz Ferdinand – You Could Have it So Much Better, and, if it counts, the Flaming Lips have a live DVD called UFO’s at the Zoo. My wife is mailing me the new Flaming Lips album, so I can’t vouch for that yet.
I’m listening to these a lot lately:
Black Francis - Blue Finger
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Murder Ballads
Yoko Kanno/The Seatbelts - Cowboy Bebop Soundtrack
The Black Angels - Passover
O’Death - Head Home
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band - Magic
Amy Winehouse - Back to Black
HorrorPops - Bring It On!
My Chemical Romance - The Black Parade
Regina Spektor - Begin to Hope
Right now, as in this week, or right now as in these last few weeks? The best music out this week would probably be Tough Alliance or Old Time Religun.
For the past couple of weeks, I can’t recommend Sunset Rubdown or the Good Life enough. The front man from each have hugely successful main projects, Wolf Parade and Cursive, respectively - but their latest two side project albums are fucking brilliant.
Best songs I could find online from each album:
Good Life - Heartbreak
Sunset Rubdown - Winged/Wicked Things
If you can, try to listen to For the Pier (and dead shimmering). One of my favorite tracks in awhile.
Jens Lekman’s new album is always amazing. Can’t stop listening to Friday Night at the Drive in Bingo .
Deadly Syndromes are also nice. I Hope I Become a Ghost
FINALLY: The Dodos. You won’t click on any of my links, but click on this one. No one so far has hated this song. I’ve had people call in telling me how much like it, in fact. Click on Men: The Dodos long (mericlong) on Myspace
Also, if you want new music, tell me what you’re into. I’ll find something that will make you happy.
