Top 6@6 Week #26: Post 6 Beck Faves With J. Buffett & J. Buckley Results From Week 25

Subtitled: The snipers are passed out in the bushes again. I’m glad I got my suit dry-cleaned before the riots started

Another Tuesday, due to yesterday’s hamster revolt, Another Closed Poll.
Last Week’s Jimmy Buffett Poll Tally: 16 Voters / 96 Selections, which garnered more feedback than Week 25’s Jeff Buckley Supplemental Poll with: 9 Voters / 51 Selections.
Factoid of the Week: Only 2 voters (Sassy & Spit) crossed genre lines last week and voted in both polls. (Can’t we all just get along?). There’ll probably be a lot more this week. On To Business:

4th: Past polls and Results:
After the ZZ Top poll, sometime this decade, the plan is to compile all the votes from the SDMB & post them in a few threads. Then I’ll burn a several volume CD set & mail ‘em out to the voters who helped keep these threads going. The scrap-heap of past polls continues to grow:
Jimmy Buffett § Jeff Buckley § The Byrds § Buffalo Springfield § Bush § Kate Bush § Jackson Browne § James Brown § Better Than Ezra § Banarama § David Bowie Boston § Bon Jovi § Blur § Belle & Sebastian§ Blue Öyster Cult § Blondie§ Blink 182§ Black Sabbath§ Black Crowes§ Bjork§ B-52’s§ Chuck Berry§ Beastie Boys§ Jeff Beck§ The Band§ Beach Boys§ Beatles§ Animals§ Tori Amos§ Allman Brothers§ AC/DC § Abba& Aerosmith polls.

Tabulation Notes: Pretty quick compilation this week. The accounting department at the 6@6 corporate offices were very careful to not screw up the results…like they did with the Beatles “Day in The Life / A Day in the Life”…if you find any errors please report them.

10th & Lastly: Week #24’s Featured Poll Artist
Without further ado, the Bohemian tried to remain faithful to his indie roots…Beck.

Here are my 6 BECK selections:

  1. Beer Can
  2. Sissyneck
  3. Loser
  4. Paper Tiger
  5. Devils Haircut
  6. The New Pollution

Thanking you all in advance. See you over at the Cake poll Have a great week!

  1. Lazy Flies The most beautiful lyrics he ever wrote.
  2. Debra The ultimate live rave-up.
  3. Puttin it Down “What you seem to be saying/ is you’re patiently waiting/ like an ashtray/ for the butt.”
  4. Pay No Mind because he’s givin’ the finger to the rock n’ roll singer.
  5. We Live Again another beautiful song from Mutations.
  6. Ramshackle

I mostly prefer his lower key folksier stuff.

I’m going to vote for all of the Beck songs I like:

  1. Loser
  2. Devil’s haircut

fastest. taken. poll. ever.

Hey, well I called for this poll, and now I have to admit that my list will not include anything from Seachange, because i have not heard a note of it. Anyone who wants to buy me a copy can email me. Go on, you know you want to.

So, bottles and cans, just clap your hands, I vote for…

  1. *Where It’s At - Two turntables and a microphone. Odelay is still his best album, and this is still his best song. White boy hip-hop that doesn’t really sound like white boy hip-hop, partly due to the fact that it’s Beck. You know, it might have the whole DJ aspect, but expecting it to sound like the Beastie Boys or worse, Vanilla Ice, would be like expecting Beck to conform to a genre. Sheesh…

  2. *Nobody’s Fault But My Own - But when he does do genre, it usually is folk. This would be my favourite Mutations track, a record that I feel often gets overlooked as it sits uncomfortably between the cleverness of Odelay and the glitz of Midnite Vultures. But, damn it, he just sounds so weary.

  3. Debra - I made up a soundtrack for an imaginary movie called The Dictator of Love last year, and this was the perfect track for it. “I wanna get with you… and your sister/ I think her name’s Debra”

  4. Nicotine and Gravy - When I first heard this song, I only heard the last bit. So I had no idea what was happening when I heard the album through. Just love the way it completely changes tone in the middle, from dreamy eastern style to the beat driven catchy chorus.

  5. Loser - Well, you know, it had to be here.

  6. Devil’s Haircut - Classic Beck - the warped chorus (what is a devil’s haircut anyway, and why does he have one on his mind?) and the nonsensical, semi-rap of the verses.
Can I make a request for a future 6@6 to head to the nightclub for the first time, take some Es and poll the Chemical Brothers?

In no particular order…

  1. Devil’s Haircut
  2. Nobody’s Fault But My Own
  3. Novacane
  4. New Pollution
  5. Loser
  6. Where it’s At
  1. Devil’s Haircut
  2. Loser
  3. Nitemare Hippy Girl
  4. Sin City (From the Gram Parsons Tribute Album)
  5. Golden Age
  6. Lost Cause

Heh…I happened to see a Dave Clark Five album the other day, and thought to myself, “I don’t believe I have ever heard a song buy those guys”. I’ll have to dig around my father’s CD collection so I can vote.

On to the poll:

  1. Sexx Laws
  2. Where It’s At
  3. Debra
  4. Truckdrivin Neighbors Downstairs
  5. Loser
  6. Pay No Mind
  1. Bottle of Blues
  2. Nitemare Hippy Girl
  3. Satan Gave Me a Taco
  4. Where It’s At
  5. Nicotine and Gravy
  6. Beercan

And I’d like to take this moment to insist on a Cheap Trick poll. Camper Van Beethoven would be nice, too, and it could possibly be coupled with Cracker.

Lost Cause
Lord Only Knows
Deadweight
Sexx Laws
Where It’s At
Debra

The New Pollution
Devil’s Hair Cut
Loser

  1. Where It’s At
  2. Devil’s Haircut
  3. Loser
  4. Debra
  5. Nobody’s Fault But My Own
  6. The New Pollution
  1. Jackass
  2. Nobody’s Fault But My Own
  3. Lost Cause

  6. Ramshackle
  1. Guess I’m Doing Fine
  2. Sexx Laws
  3. Tropicalia
  4. Devil’s Haircut
  5. Loser
  6. Where It’s At

I only own Mellow Gold so my list will lean hard that way.
6. Pay no Mind
5. Beercan
4. Loser
3. Where It’s At
2. Devil’ Haircut
and far and away my favorite

  1. Nightmare Hippy Girl
  1. Devil’s Haircut
  2. Pay No Mind
  3. Mexico
  4. Nobody’s Fault But My Own
  5. Loser
  6. Where It’s At

I’m keen on a Cocteau Twins poll but I fear it may do as badly as my Bananarama request. Your call.

Golden Age
Nobody’s Fault but My Own
Mexico
Deborah
Where It’s At
Beer Can

Honorable Mention:
Soul Sucking Jerk

  1. Loser
  2. Beercan
  3. High 5. —someone wrote you wouldnt expect him to sound like the Beastie Boys…how about THAT song??? (though a slight parody)
  4. Steal my body home
  5. Pay no Mind
  6. Tropicalia

note that while, obviously, i have Mellow Gold. I also have odelay, and while a good album, most of the songs dont really “stand out”.

note – I was sorely tempted to vote for “Better Days” since everyone thinks thats by Beck anyway

you know, “better days”, by Queensryche?
