4th: Past polls and Results:
After the ZZ Top poll, sometime this decade, the plan is to compile all the votes from the SDMB & post them in a few threads. Then I’ll burn a several volume CD set & mail ‘em out to the voters who helped keep these threads going. The scrap-heap of past polls continues to grow: The Cars § Neko Case / New Pornographers § Canned Heat § J J Cale § Johnny Cash § Cab Calloway § Dave Clark Five § Bonzo Dog Band§ Cake§ Beck (Hanson) § Jimmy Buffett § Jeff Buckley § The Byrds § Buffalo Springfield § Bush § Kate Bush § Jackson Browne § James Brown § Better Than Ezra § Banarama § David Bowie Boston § Bon Jovi § Blur § Belle & Sebastian§ Blue Öyster Cult § Blondie§ Blink 182§ Black Sabbath§ Black Crowes§ Bjork§ B-52’s§ Chuck Berry§ Beastie Boys§ Jeff Beck§ The Band§ Beach Boys§ Beatles§ Animals§ Tori Amos§ Allman Brothers§ AC/DC § Abba& Aerosmith polls.

5th: Week 30 Results:
Tabulation Notes: A lot more Cars votes than I would have guessed. The results, in my opinion, are a little troubling. This is the first instance I can recall where those damned FM radio program directors and demo researchers seem to have their fingers on the pulse of what listeners like. Usually, these polls seem to include a lot of tracks that you rarely if ever hear on the airwaves. The Cars results ran contrary to that rule. All the songs with the most votes are still in heavy rotation and all the runners up have been forgotten in time. The accounting department at the 6@6 corporate offices tried to be careful to not screw up the results…like they did with the Beatles “Day in The Life / A Day in the Life”…if you find any errors please report them.

7th: Newly Revamped Tentative Schedule & Disclaimers
In an attempt to wrap these polls up before (God forbid) I turn 40 and due to the large quantity or requested polls, there will now be 3 polls per week:
[ol][li]A Featured Poll: Which will have the main band poll and results from all the previous week’s polls. Color Code: Blue[/li][li]A Headliner Poll: A band whose genre / style compliments the Featured poll artist and is alphabetically consistent or an offshoot band poll from the featured artist. Color Code: Red[/li][li]A Supplemental Poll: When necessary. Usually a “minor” band who isn’t all that popular or influential but nonetheless was requested. Hopefully I can match up styles and genres as well as the alphabet will allow, or, at a minimum, get close on a generational / time period level. Color Code: Green[/ol] [/li]Based on requests and the like:
[ul][li]This Week features: Captain Beefheart with a Nick Cave headliner poll and a Leonard Cohen supplemental poll. [/li][li]Week #32 features: Alice Cooper as per chief with brianjedi’s Alice In Chains headliner poll & Tit Whistles’s Cheap Trick supplemental poll.[/li][li]Week #33 features: The Clash with an Elvis Costello headliner poll & a Collective Soul supplemental poll. [/li][li]Week #34 features: Cream with a Eric Clapton headliner poll & a Ginger Baker’s Airforce, Jack Bruce / Graham Bond Organization supplemental poll. [/li][li]Week #35 features: Concrete Blond with a Cowboy Junkies headliner poll & Skijumper’s Cocteau Twins supplemental poll.[/li][li] Week #36 features: Cheryl Crow as per elfkin477 & Treviathan with 5 time champ’s Chicago headliner poll and Sunshine’s Jim Croce supplemental poll. (Subtitled the M.O.R. week)[/li][li]Week #37 features: Cracker with Tit Whistle’s Camper Van Beethoven headliner poll.[/li][li]Week #38 features: Creed with Treviathan’s Counting Crows headliner poll & a Crowded House supplemental poll.[/li][li]Week #39 features: Creedence Clearwater Revival with a John Fogerty headliner poll & Labdad’s Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen supplemental poll.[/li][li]Week #40 features: CSN(&Y) as per cmkeller with a Neil Young headliner poll and a Stills / Manassas, Crosby / Nash & Other offshoot projects supplemental poll.[/li][li]Week #41 features: The Cure with a Cult headliner poll & gex gex’s Chemical Brothers supplemental poll.[/ul][/li]A little re-organization, added a few offshoots and saved a month in the process. If you feel I’ve alphabetically passed over a band, speak up. If I don’t hear to the contrary, we’ll be in the D’s by the end of January 2003.

8th: Week #31’s Headliner Poll (In another, as yet unknown, thread)
I can’t provide a link to it because the featured poll and results get posted first. 10th: Week #31’s Featured Poll Artist’s Discography(Reader’s Digest Version)
If your memory of the featured artist isn’t exactly up to speed, here’s a link to the discography (usually) with 30 second previews of some of the tracks when you drill down through the albums: Dust Sucker Mirror Man Sessions Grow Fins-Rarities 1965-82 Dust Blows Forward-Anthology Safe As Milk Mirror Man Bongo Fury Spotlight Kid/Clear Spot Trout Mask Replica Strictly Personal Safe As Milk. This link is provided by CD Now. It’s provided to refresh your Beefheart “101” knowledge & jar loose any forgotten titles. (Please refrain from voting based on .wav previews).

Lastly: Week #31’s Featured Poll Artist
Without further ado…the man who brought you Antenna Jimmy Semens, Rocket Morton & Zoot Horn Rollo: Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band.

Here are my 6 CAPTAIN BEEFHEART selections:

  1. Lick My Decals Off Baby
  2. Old Fart At Play
  3. Diddy Wah Diddy
  4. Abba Zabba
  5. The Blimp (Mousetrapreplica)
  6. Neon Meate Dream Of A Octafish

Thanking you all in advance. The question I’m dying to know: Will anyone at all vote this week in any of the 3 polls. Is obscurity in the eye of the beholder? I hope to see someone at the Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen polls. Have a great week!

Not obscure enough. I know we have some other Beefheart fans here, but you finally got me where I live. So, without further ado … my six favorites :

1 : Big-Eyed Beans from Venus
2 : Veteran’s Day Poppy
3 : Kandy Korn
4 : Click Clack
5 : Candle Mambo
6 : The Blimp

I reckon there’s going to be a ton of different tracks with one vote each in this poll, as there aren’t too many ‘obvious’ choices, but lots of great ones. For what they’re worth, here are mine:

  • Clear Spot

  • Frownland

  • Electricity

  • Sure Nuff N Yes I Do

  • Too Much Time

  • Frying Pan

I’m afraid I can only be with you guys in spirit this week. I’ve only heard one Nick Cave song, never heard Beefheart (which from CDnow, seems pretty cool), and I can’t say I have any favorite Cohen songs.

::goes back to CDnow and listens to Captain Beefheart::

  1. Sure 'Nuff 'N Yes I Do
  2. Zig Zag Wanderer
  3. Abba Zaba
  4. Moonlight in Vermont
  5. When Big Joan Sets Up
  6. China Pig

I’ve only heard thread that I really like:

White Jam
Her Eyes Are a Blue Million Miles
Nowadays a Woman’s Gotta Hit a Man

  1. Woe-is-uh-me-Bop
  2. The Blimp (Mousetrapreplica)
  3. Sure Nuff 'N Yes I Do
  4. Lick My Decals Off, Baby
  5. The Smithsonian Institution Blues (The Big Dig)
  6. I Love You, You Big Dummy

I’m a big fan of the album “Lick My Decals Off, Baby” and am distressed it isn’t currently available on CD.

Well, I guess I gotta chime in for the Captain. Been a fan since Safe As Milk. Still miss the bumper sticker.
I saw him live several times, the first in '72 when Little Feat opened for them. After the show the band was just hanging out on the stage so my friends and I went up on stage and started talking to Don and Artie Tripp. Those were the days. I still have Don’s autograph, one of my treasures.
It’s hard to pick the top six as they change often as I revisit his various albums, so here are my top six at this moment:

  1. Crazy Little Thing
  2. Click Clack
  3. Willie The Pimp (I know… it’s a Zappa song… but I think Don makes it what it is.)
  4. Her Eyes Are A Blue Million Miles
  5. Woe Is Uh Me Bop
  6. One Red Rose That I Mean… or else… Abba Zabba
