AFAIK, Motherless Children is written by Clapton. It was also used as the theme for a short lived network TV series “Not Necessarily the News” which was (I believe) a version of the britcom “Not the Nine 'O Clock News” Truly outlandish slide work, it’s catchy and fun, yet dark and broodish at the same time.

upon review it appears the song was actually written by Blind Willie Johnson and the Rev. Gary Davis
so i suppose richie could have recorded it as well. so nevermind.
